Follow-up from my yesterday blog post: Singapore is the first to have social networking mobile phone in Asia, I have let Tech65 to do the unboxing of INQ Mini 3G (as they are more professional than me in doing unboxing).

As you can see it from the video, the device is pretty small and it fits nicely with your hand. It weighs 90g which is pretty light for a device that connects you to the internet whenever you go.

Battery life has been pretty good. I have been facebooking with the device since early in the morning and the battery is still at the healthy level when I am back home at night. I foresee that it can last me for the entire day tomorrow.

Although it is not laggy when you switched across different application, it does take a while to refresh the facebook contents probably it is due to the slower GPRS/HSDPA network.

The uploading of photo over the internet is fast. Although the 2.0 megapixel fixed focus camera produces a lower-than-market standard picture quality, I can upload a pic to facebook account in about 5 seconds. I can share a decent photo in a shortest period of time.

Critique: We still don’t know the price of this phone in Singapore yet but based on the estimation of £59.99, I will say it is a good substitute against smart phones in the market. Given its portability, it delivers good user experience for mobile phone users to engage in social network (in the mobile way).

Creative bets big on Zii technology

CREATIVE Technology’s US$1 billion technology bet, Zii, could show up in TV set-top boxes, digital signage systems and mobile phones from other manufacturers next year.

In an interview with BT, ZiiLabs president Hock Leow offered the clearest directions yet for the local tech group’s latest computing chip technology foray, which was launched in January this year.

The US-based executive, who was in Singapore last week, said that over the next 12 months ‘you will definitely see some form of set-top box from somebody, and some customers embracing it in the digital signage area, while the mobile phone is definitely a possibility’.

He hinted that future Zii-powered devices could include those that run on Internet search giant Google’s upcoming Chrome computer operating system, which could bring Zii into the realm of netbooks.

‘A Zii set-top box can be built for, I am guessing, in the neighbourhood of US$50’, making such devices significantly cheaper than those in the market today, he said. Its low-cost appeal should also make Zii a hit with makers of digital signage systems found in shopping malls, which typically comprise big screen TVs displaying advertisements or informercials fed by PCs or laptops.

As for upcoming Zii mobile phones, they could look like the Zii EGG, a handset Creative launched last month, which runs the Google mobile phone operating system, Android.

Mr Hock said ZiiLabs has been talking with companies and partners from a number of countries including Singapore, about adopting this technology.

He added that Creative is also mulling the possibility of using this technology in the future for its own line of products, such as video conferencing systems and speakers.

Targeted at developers and manufacturers, Creative’s Zii is a low-powered, low-cost computing platform aimed at a broad range of manufacturers as building blocks for mobile phones and other electronic devices. Developed by Creative unit 3DLabs, now renamed ZiiLabs, it features ‘ready-made technologies that can be put together almost like a Lego set, allowing companies to get to the market as fast as possible’, Mr Hock said.

Zii is the latest revenue-diversification effort by Creative, which saw revenues plunge 37 per cent to US$466.1 million for its FY2009. The company last year launched a video conferencing system called inPerson, but that has yet to become a hit. Now, with Zii, market watchers are once again talking it up as Creative’s next big thing.

With Zii, Creative is trying to emulate the business model of chip-makers like Intel Corp, which not only makes chips but designs chipsets, as well as works with software vendors to ensure their applications run well on the hardware.

Mr Hock added, however, that Creative is going one step further by making near-complete products, such as the Zii EGG, which manufacturers can use to churn out their own finished products faster than they can with just starting out from a chipset.

‘Doing something like the Zii EGG really connected what an end product can be to the silicon. This is because the silicon is one end of the spectrum and the end product like the Zii EGG is another end of the spectrum, and between that there is so much work that has to get done – and not every company possesses all levels of engineering to bring it together,’ he said.

‘For some companies, the time savings (by adopting the Zii platform) can be as much as 12 months.’

Mr Hock said this platform can earn ‘significant’ revenue for Creative in future but declined to give a forecast. He did, however, predict that Zii’s biggest market in the near term will be China, because manufacturers there ‘are willing to try and eager to catch up’.

It weights 1,19kg (pretty light)

What’s the price? VAIO = expensive? I am quite surprised when I was informed that it costs $899. if you have read my previous post NOTEBOOK THAT FITS NICELY IN YOUR POCKET, the not-so-powerful VAIO P costs about $1000. It is quite evident that Sony has changed its pricing strategies. 

This is only my first impression of the product. If I can get more information or possibly, getting a review set, I can share with you guys more.

IDA denies SingTel full regulatory relief

4 of 7 appeals over dominant licensee obligations rejected

(SINGAPORE) After deliberating for 18 months, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) is standing firm on its decision to deny Singapore Telecom full exemption from government regulations designed to keep the country’s largest operator in check.

The telecommunications regulator has officially turned down four of SingTel’s seven appeals to be freed from so-called ‘dominant licensee obligations’ relating to the provision of business telephony services.

Under Singapore’s Telecom Competition Code, SingTel is subject to these stringent operating rules in areas where it is deemed to have a commanding market presence. The conditions were put in place to ensure SingTel deals with other telecommunications licensees in a fair and non-discriminatory manner. For example, it requires SingTel to offer other service providers access to parts of its infrastructure under prices and conditions set by the government.

SingTel submitted two appeals for regulatory relief to IDA in October 2007. The first ‘customer segment request’ applied to corporate clients who spend more than $250,000 a year on telecom services, while the second ‘market-based request’ was for six business telephony services.

IDA reached a final decision this week after three rounds of public feedback and interviews with other industry players over the past 18 months.

‘SingTel’s request is far broader than its three previous exemption requests,’ IDA’s deputy director-general of telecom and post Andrew Haire said in a letter to SingTel on Tuesday.

‘If IDA were to grant SingTel’s request in its entirety, SingTel would be relieved from dominant licensee regulation for all telecommunication services it provides to government and business customers who spend at least $250,000 a year on telecommunication services.’

Full exemption in this customer segment would mean that SingTel would be unshackled from dominant licensee stipulations for most of the services it provides to businesses with a telecom budget below $250,000, he added.

Given these considerations, IDA decided to reject SingTel’s first customer-segment request. However, the regulator will grant SingTel regulatory relief for three of the six market segments contained in its second request.

According to Mr Haire, the backhaul and terrestrial international private leased circuits (IPLC) segments ‘are now effectively competitive’ and SingTel will be freed from its dominant licensee obligations in these markets. In addition, the regulator will continue to exempt SingTel in the international managed data services market.

These exemptions, however, will not be extended to the remaining three Singapore-centric business segments detailed by SingTel.

‘IDA has concluded that because effective competition has not yet taken root in the business local telephony service, LLC (local leased circuit) and local managed data service, IDA will not grant exemption in those markets,’ Mr Haire said.

The rulings are expected to kick in by June 16. When contacted, SingTel did not confirm whether it will appeal to IDA. ‘We are reviewing the decision. However, we welcome IDA’s decision to relieve us from dominant licensee obligations in respect to the terrestrial IPLC market and the backhaul market,’ a SingTel spokesman said.
