The findings from the ESET Japan Cyber-Savviness Report 2016, showed that despite smartphone users in Japan being some of the most knowledgeable in Asia-Pacific when it comes to cybersecurity, this does not necessarily lead to safer online behaviour.
The survey highlighted that while most smartphone users in Japan know they should take security measures like regularly updating their operating system (75%), only installing apps from trusted sources (67%), and changing passwords regularly (60%), very few actually follow these best practices.
Results showed that over half of all Japanese smartphone users (56.3%) believe that a PC is more likely to be hacked as compared to a mobile device, which explains why so few respondents in Japan proactively download security solutions onto their smartphones. Results highlighted that only a tiny 22 percent of Japanese respondents use credible paid-for security solutions to protect their smartphone, and only 35 percent use free antivirus software.
“Japan is known to be one of the most advanced consumer technology markets in Asia-Pacific, yet there is still a mismatch between what the smartphone users in Japan know they ‘should do’ versus what they ‘actually do’. It’s a myth that PCs and laptops are more likely to be targeted by cybercriminals than mobile devices. Users should start to recognise that their smartphones are like mini computers that are just as powerful as PCs, and in most cases store highly sensitive information that is extremely valuable to cybercriminals,” said Lukas Raska, COO Asia-Pacific, at ESET.
Mr Raska adds, “It takes small steps to making sure you have security software in place to protect against attacks or keeping your passwords regularly updated would make a huge difference when it comes to staying safe online.”
ESET polled 1,033 respondents in Japan to gain insights into the attitudes, knowledge and user behaviour there when it comes to cybersecurity. The study showed that while users in Japan are knowledgeable about cybersecurity and take few risks online, they still have some way to go in ensuring that they’re adequately protected from online threats. Cyber-savviness is based on factors such as users’ knowledge or ability to understand activities that are likely to make them vulnerable online, risky behaviours while surfing the web, and the proactive steps they can take to protect themselves online.

New Sabre Red Workspace promises to transform the way consultants and suppliers work together to create personalised experiences for travelers
SINGAPORE, June 29, 2016 – Global travel technology leader Sabre Corporation (NASDAQ: SABR) has given travel consultants and suppliers across the airline, hotel, rail, cruise and car rental industries a sneak peek at its game-changing Sabre Red Workspace. The software solution will harness the changes in the industry and provide both retailers and suppliers with a content rich marketplace, intelligent decision support tools and predictive data insights that enable agents and suppliers to more easily create personalised experiences for travellers.
Developed on Sabre’s merchandising platform providing access to its award-winning GDS, travel consultants around the world will benefit from a more intuitive way to book travel, while airlines, hotels and other industry suppliers are now empowered to market their brands in the same way they market in other channels.
“Data, analytics, personalization and mobile have been trending in the marketplace for some time and offer exciting opportunities for buyers and suppliers to meet changing traveler needs,” said Sean Menke, president of Sabre Travel Network. “Travellers want more than an itinerary; they want to feel confident about their purchases and expect a trip built around choice. That’s why in addition to a superior user experience, our new Sabre Red Workspace provides travel consultants with data insights, relevant offers and price transparency. Data and analytics are critical assets to increase productivity and efficiency in the retail world, and our travel insight engine will help drive decision-making, revenue optimisation and true personalisation.”
Sabre will begin upgrading travel agency customers to the new solution in early 2017, after a pilot later this year.
“Asia Pacific’s travel market is expanding – fact. Rapid economic growth and rising expendable incomes across the region’s burgeoning middle classes keep driving up demand. But with this, traveler expectations are also on the rise. We’re a region that dominates the global mobile economy and easier access to extensive travel information online continues to drive a more informed, more demanding traveller,” commented Roshan Mendis, senior vice president of Sabre Travel Network Asia Pacific. “Expectations for choice, flexibility, price and personalisation are at an all-time high. The release of the new Sabre Red Workspace will help travel retailers and suppliers respond directly to this new generation of traveller.”
Agents and suppliers who have been involved in the development of the innovative solution have helped drive the user interface of the new travel marketplace solution, combining the look and feel of a consumer-focused website with insights, tools and features that help drive more personalized offerings to sell travel more effectively.
“Sabre has always been very committed to bringing new technologies to market, but what’s so effective about their approach is the investment made to ensure these solutions are highly adaptive and relevant for all their customers, wherever we are in the world. We’re very excited to be part of the early testing and adoption for this new release of Sabre Red Workspace, which we predict will take travel shopping in Asia Pacific to the next level,” commented Thomas Chong, Managing Director and CEO of CWT/Holiday Tours Malaysia.
The combination of data-driven booking trend information with intuitive design and a consumer-grade user interface, smart product differentiation for air extras and Branded Fares, and inspirational shopping are among the many new features enabling agents to deliver personalised experiences and invaluable consultancy to their customers.
The new Sabre Red Workspace intelligent platform features innovative integration of Sabre Dev Studio APIs, to equip travel consultants with a unique Decision Support Bar providing market data and intelligence services for fare trend and range, travel seasonality and alternate airports. Just imagine if a travel consultant could advise on the best time to book to get the best price, predict the best days of travel, or even offer more options to choose from including alternate airports displayed in interactive maps. That’s travel consultancy at its best, with simplified comparison shopping to cleverly serve the specific needs of travellers.
The user-friendly interface of the new end-to-end solution also integrates revenue maximisation tools, including unique indicators that alert the travel consultants about opportunities to increase sales and commissions while offering differentiated options that cater to the traveller’s preferences. The enhanced product information, especially for air extras and Branded Fares, simplifies the shopping experience and reduces training times for newly hired travel consultants.
“Aside from helping us enhance the travel services we offer to customers, we anticipate that the new Sabre Red Workspace will significantly increase efficiencies within our own business, via the platform’s enhanced user interface which accommodates either command language or graphical content depending on our agents’ preferences,” added Mr. Noor Mohammed, Director South of AEG Travel Services, one of Pakistan’s’ leading Travel Management Companies.
Value for Suppliers
The new Sabre Red Workspace is also an enhanced platform for suppliers. The Sabre platform features advanced merchandising capabilities with enhanced product information through images, video and more, enabling airlines, hotels and other travel providers to leverage the Sabre travel marketplace for an omni-channel marketing strategy. The graphically-rich workflow supports ancillary and branded fares sales, and enhanced hotel capabilities.
“Sabre Red Workspace was designed with both supplier and agent needs in mind. Suppliers can count on improved consistency across channels while agents can work wherever and however they want, moving seamlessly between command and graphical interfaces,” said Menke.
The new Sabre Red Workspace will provide a consistent user experience across multiple operating systems and devices, including desktop, Sabre Red Mobile for consultants while onthe-go, and Sabre Web Services powering the world’s leading online travel agencies. The new merchandising platform is an upgrade that proves continuous innovation to provide stability, speed and performance in travel commerce transactions.

As a business owner, you may not understand what’s the big deal of having DDoS protection. Even more so, you might not even know why you would need to pay SGD 699 per month for such service. To begin with, it might be easier to start off by understanding what is a DDoS attack?
DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Services. According to Wikipedia, a denial-of-service (DoS) attack is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users, such as to temporarily or indefinitely interrupt or suspend services of a host connected to the Internet. A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) is where the attack source is more than one, often thousands of, unique IP addresses. It is analogous to a group of people crowding the entry door or gate to a shop or business, and not letting legitimate parties enter into the shop or business, disrupting normal operations.
That may not sound easy to explain. I searched all over the internet and manage to find this video which may help you better understand DDoS attack.
In recent years, such attacks are getting more common. According to the Akamai 2015 quarterly report on cyber security, frequency of DDoS attacks has doubled. Seeing the rising needs of such protection, ViewQwest launched their DDoS Protection Service that defends the networks of banks, e-commerce vendors, telcos and just about any business with an online presence against the increasingly malicious and debilitating DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attacks.
Powered by enterprise security specialist NSFOCUS, the new service aims to make premium-grade Internet security more affordable for businesses and even governments which are increasingly beefing up their IT infrastructure to defend against this rising Internet menace.
Increasingly, businesses and government in the region are going beyond getting plain-vanilla Internet access to “clean-pipes” which are premium Internet lines with built-in tech that can automatically identify malicious DDoS traffic in the networks and filter them to “scrubbing centres” to take away the nefarious packets before sending the good packets back to the user.
ViewQwest offers cloud-based and provider-based DDoS mitigation to all businesses. ViewQwest’s DDoS Protection Service starts from $699 per month, the most affordable in Singapore.
Mr. Vignesa Moorthy, CEO of ViewQwest, said: “Singapore is the regional hub for e-commerce and online services. With this partnership, we aim to offer premium-class DDoS mitigation to protect these websites at prices that they can afford to help boost Singapore’s position as the leading online services hub in this region.”
DDoS attacks – where hackers paralyse websites by overwhelming them with web traffic, often using an army of infected computers from all over the world – have become more frequent and destructive over the last few years. Experts believe that the DDoS attack on the BBC website at the end of last year may have been the largest recorded attack in history, hitting the 600Gbps mark.
Mr. Allan Thompson, COO of NSFOCUS said: “DDoS attacks are moving away from being just nuisance attacks to becoming a decoy that precedes more malicious attacks, such as stealing confidential information.”
DDoS attacks show no sign of slowing down because the barrier to entry to launch a DDoS attack is very low. DDoS attacks are not expensive to launch, costing as little as US$25 per hour for 1000 compromised computers to attack a single victim.
About ViewQwest DDoS Protection Service
Up-to-date and equipped to fight volumetric and application-targeted DDoS attacks, ViewQwest’s DDoS Protection Service actively monitors for unusual activity and diverts suspicious traffic to its scrubbing centre to filter real users from bots. After identifying DDoS attacks in real-time, a trigger is sent to drop the malicious traffic so business operations can continue smoothly.

With the growing number of PCs and mobile devices per household, new survey highlights people value data more than hardware
Singapore – 31 March 2016 – A new global study sponsored by Acronis®, a global leader in hybrid cloud data protection, reveals a growing understanding about the value of, and attitudes toward, the protection of personal data on computers, mobile phones and tablet devices. Nearly half of survey respondents have more than four devices in a household to protect and 45 percent of survey respondents fear losing photos and videos the most. Security and privacy were cited as key requirements for backing up data.
Emerging concerns for personal data protection
The traditional fears of hardware failure and accidental deletion are no longer the sole reasons people fear data loss. Cyber-threats like ransomware, a type of malicious software designed to block access to a computer system and its data until a sum of money is paid, is a growing threat to individuals and businesses. According to Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), a partnership between the FBI and the nonprofit National White Collar Crime Center, between April 2014 and June 2015, the IC3 received 992 CryptoWall-related (ransomware) complaints, with victims reporting losses totaling over $18 million.
According to Kaspersky Security Bulletin 2015, Singapore suffers from malware attacks in banking ahead of other countries, with 11.6% of surveyed users targeted at least once by banking Trojans throughout the year. Backup is one effective recovery option for CryptoWall and malware-related attacks.
The data protection survey, conducted by Acronis with Google Consumer Surveys, focused on understanding data protection behavior. Key findings from the more than 4,000 individuals include:
The most important data protection features were security (cited by 30% of respondents), ease-of-use at 36%, and privacy at 26%.
46% have more than four devices (computers, laptops, smart phones) in their homes.
Currently, 38% back up to external drives and 30% back up to the cloud.
58% percent of consumers back up at night and 27% backup while watching TV.
A new category of “data protectors”
With the median household having at least four devices, an emerging trend of users called “family data protectors” is also gaining traction. The sheer growth of data captured in mobile pictures and videos, music files, and scanned family documents means the family data protector ensures the immediate and extended family is prepared for, and protected against, data loss.
“Data loss via hardware failure, file deletion, and ransomware are factors most people don’t think about on a daily basis, but when they do occur the results are devastating,” said Steve Goh, Vice President and GM of Sales, APAC & EMM of Acronis. “Our survey results illustrate a growing general recognition of the value of data stored on family computers and devices, especially given the price people are willing to pay for their data. We hope that this new information, presented on World Backup Day, will encourage even more people to backup their data and protect their personal information.”
Three simple steps to improving your data protection
For anyone, but especially for family data protectors, keeping digital memories and fiduciary documents safe, secure and private, is a responsibility that can be easy and inexpensive to exercise. Below are some tips to help:
Always have a backup of a family’s critical data, documents, pictures and videos.
Keep your operating systems on the most up-to-date version. Those security patches and software updates are important
Be mindful of suspicious emails or clicking on links sent by unknown sources, it could be a phishing scheme or Ransomware.
