Entrepreneur’s Insights: Interview with Mr Isaac Tay, Co-Founder of honestbee

honestbee isaacTime flies and without you knowing, it is about time to say good bye to 2015. It is also time to get busy with Christmas shopping! But, how are you going to bash through swarm of shoppers during this festive season especially in a shopping place like supermarket?

That’s market’s need that honestbee is trying to fulfil. Our latest episode of Entrepreneur’s Insight, we interviewed Mr Isaac Tay, Co-Founder of honestbee.

  1. honestbee has been receiving a lot of media attention ever since the receipt of USD 15M funding. However, many people know the name but might not exactly know what honestbee is doing. Do you mind give a short description of the company?

We are the first on-demand, concierge grocery delivery service that is able to deliver to your doorstep on the same day, typically within the hour following your order. Our goal is to get you what you need, when you need it. In-store concierge shoppers trained by honestbee make sure the items in your shopping cart, including meat and produce, are carefully handpicked for you with freshness guaranteed.

  1. Technology sector is growing exponentially in Southeast Asia region. Rising affluence, rapid urbanization and population growth pose opportunities for e-commerce, m-commerce or these days, people call it “social commerce”. What’s your view on this?

Southeast Asia is not the only part of the world where the technology sector is experiencing growth. In this market though, we see that different parts of Southeast Asia are progressing at varying speeds and in multiple directions. That said, there are two constant areas of growth – mobile and online shopping – in the world of e-Commerce.

Logistics and payments are two important aspects of e-commerce. In Asia, however, different countries have different methods and systems. For us to succeed in Southeast Asia, local knowledge and partners are very important, and this is something technology cannot replace.

The opportunity as an Asian company headquartered in Singapore is that we are well-positioned to learn what works in the Western innovation hubs such as Silicon Valley, then tailor it to the local context with our understanding of the social fabrics of the various Southeast Asian countries honestbee is in.

  1. There are other online grocery shopping sites in the market? How is honestbee different from other online platforms?

We aim to bring convenience with the best service to our customers so that they can spend more time on what matters most to them. This includes bring fresh produce to them, as if they are shopping at the stores for themselves.

Ordering via honestbee is simple:

  • Enter your address and start shopping online at any of honestbee’s partner stores.
  • Choose a 1 hour delivery window to have your groceries delivered.
  • Once the order is placed, an expert honestbee concierge shopper immediately starts picking out your selected items. (Do note that like shopping on your own, some products may invariably be unavailable. Customers are able to choose similar replacement products when ordering, making it both interactive and intuitive to your needs. Additionally, your shopper will call you if necessary to ensure you get what you want.)

  1. What are the challenges or opportunities for honestbee in the next 3 years?

Recruiting the brightest young talent is a major challenge as we are competing with more established brands for their attention. However, with our recent funding announcement that we are backed by world-class Silicon Valley investors, this will change.

  1. What is the expansion plan for honestbee?

We intend to expand our business across Asia. We recently just launched in Hong Kong and will be extending our services to Taiwan and other parts of Asia.

  1. What is your view on IoT? Do you see any unexplored market in this space for honestbee to fulfill?

We are in the very early days of IoT, so there is definitely a lot of room for growth – not just for honestbee, but for the other brands as well. When the technology catches up and becomes more accessible, it will make our life better and more efficient be it at work or at home.

Our mission is to create happy homes with delightful services and flexible jobs. IoT, with its promise of better sensors and data, will definitely provide opportunities to create new services that can improve homes.

  1. Our Singapore readers could be interested on honestbee’s plan in Singapore. With the fresh injection of fund, do you plan to expand your workforce here?

Singapore is our headquarters – our founders are Singaporeans and all of the people in our senior leadership team are Singaporeans. This is something we’re proud of as we all want to put Singapore on the world map as a place with strong start-ups. With the funding, we will expand our business and workforce locally and in Asia. We plan to attract back the best engineering talent who have been working in the top companies in Silicon Valley; this will facilitate knowledge transfer.

  1. Hiring and talent retention are one of the challenges that startup faces. How did you manage such issue?

We are very humbled by our low attrition rate here at honestbee. We are also proud to say that there is a strong bond and camaraderie between everyone, where we work hard and play hard.

We will also regularly organise get-togethers for our team to catch up and get to know each other better. Just recently, we had a family Halloween event where everyone was dressed to the nines. One of the teams even came in as zombies from The Walking Dead.

The most important thing is to understand the aspirations of all the members in my team. I’ve aimed to recruit motivated people with a shared vision, and have constantly ensure that the company’s goals are aligned with their individual’s aspirations.

Alignment is something I take very seriously, and within three months of joining a company, every member of my team has had at least three ‘health checks’ with me. During these sessions, the members of my team are unreservedly candid, and we have made countless improvements from the feedback.

For example, we noticed engineers were being interrupted with questions and it was hard to get into a rhythm of coding. We instituted no-speaking hours between 2pm-4pm on Tuesday and Thursday. This has also created the side effect where folks make better use of meetings.

  1. What advices will you give for our budding entrepreneurs or people who want to start a business?

I would say, if you dare to dream, then go ahead to aim and build. Don’t waste time thinking too much about it or you will never start. Of course, it is also important to build strong and meaningful relationships. You’ll be surprised how powerful this is.

  1. It is said that every entrepreneur has their own set of checklist while evaluating a venture. As an entrepreneur, do you mind sharing with us yours?

For me, it’s two key points:

  • Will this improve people’s lives
  • Are there people willing to pay for this improvement to their lives

ASUS ZenWatch 2

The ZenWatch 2 is ASUS’ latest entry in the Zen-inspired line of wearables. The elegantly designed ZenWatch 2 uses a stainless-steel casing and features a hand-polished finishing. To top off its timeless look, the digital crown is designed to look like its traditional dress watch counterpart.

The ZenWatch 2 is designed to be a truly personal device that wearers can customise even further to express their unique sense of style. Available in two sizes, Sparrow, the larger 1.63-inch gunmetal housing and navy blue leather strap, and Wren, the 1.43-inch silver housing and khaki leather strap

Fine Watch Craftsmanship

The ASUS ZenWatch 2 features a durable stainless-steel case available in two sizes that cater to both female and male users. A metal crown button adorns the case, similar to traditional watch styling and providing a quick way to access apps and turn the screen on or off. The watch crystal is designed with a gentle curve for an elegant look and improved usability by providing a smooth surface for easy and responsive swiping gestures. It is made from tough Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3 for protection against scratches and damage.

Highly Personal and Customisable

The ZenWatch 2 is available with a wide range of straps in a variety of materials and colours for further personalisation. The wide variety of available designs allows wearers to customise their watch to fit any style, activity, or mood, such as a traditional watch face for work or a night out, a sports watch face for exercise, or a more casual design for leisure time. With the new FaceDesigner smartphone app, wearers can even create their own watch faces with the look and functionality they desire for a truly personal and unique ZenWatch 2 experience.

Smart Assistant App

Powered by the latest version of Android Wear, the ZenWatch 2 is a smart assistant for Android and iOS smartphones providing wearers with a convenient, at-a-glance view of incoming calls, messages, notifications, and other important information without having to remove their phone from their pocket or bag. The ZenWatch 2 comes with a wide-range of software features, including ASUS ZenUI apps, Business Helper, FoneHelper, Remote Camera, and ZenWatch Message.

The ZenWatch 2 seamlessly integrates with the ZenUI on the ASUS smartphones, allowing wearers enjoy wearable-optimised ZenUI apps, such as What’s Next and Do It Later. What’s Next keeps wearers informed of important information as they need to know it, such as details of their next upcoming appointment or the weather at their next destination. The Do It Later feature allows wearers defer events such as incoming phone calls and messages by automatically adding them to a list of reminders, so they can stay focused on their current task.

ZenWatch 2 introduces Business Helper, a suite of features to assist wearers with common businessrelated tasks, such as checking their agendas, managing email, and viewing their call logs. In addition to the Business Helper, the ZenWatch 2 comes with an improved version of FoneHelper, a collection of features including Quick Settings, Cover to Mute, Unlock My Phone, and Forgot Phone Warning that are designed to provide a more convenient and enjoyable smartphone experience.

The Remote Camera function provide wearers with the ability to display their smartphone’s camera viewfinder on their ZenWatch 2. This frees them to take photos from creative angles where the viewfinder would be difficult to see, such as when holding their phone overhead at a concert or other crowded event. Remote Camera is also useful for group photos, letting the photographer compose the photo, release the shutter, and check the final result while being included in the shot. The Remote Camera function offers faster performance, greater range, the ability to switch between the phone’s front and rear cameras, plus zoom capability.

The ZenWatch Message is a fun new watch-to-watch communication app that allows wearers to exchange short messages, emojis, and drawings with other ZenWatch 2 wearers right from their wrists. In addition to software improvements, the ZenWatch 2 comes with an enhanced battery that provides up to two days of use on a single charge. An all-new magnetic charger effortlessly attaches to the ZenWatch 2 and it takes just 36 minutes to charge the ZenWatch
2 from zero to 50% capacity.

Advanced Wellness Manager

Comfortable to wear all day and built with sophisticated sensors, the ZenWatch 2 works together with the completely redesigned Wellness smartphone app to provide a comprehensive solution for managing fitness. The ZenWatch 2 is a full-featured activity tracker with a built-in pedometer that provides industry leading step-counting accuracy to give wearers a clear and precise picture of their activity level. Its IP67 water-resistant case is impervious to sweat, so wearers can use the ZenWatch 2 to track even their most vigorous workouts.

A new workout coaching feature tracks a variety of activity types including walking, running, push-ups, and sit-ups, letting wearers set goals for each workout. The ZenWatch 2 monitors the workout, provides feedback along the way, and notifies wearers with a congratulatory notification when they meet their goal. Furthermore, it helps wearers stay active throughout the day by providing reminders to get up and move at regular intervals.

With the Wellness smartphone app, wearers can open the Wellness app on their smartphone to see all of their activity information organised in one convenient location. It displays daily and weekly activity summaries, presented as attractive, easy-to-understand timelines and charts to help wearers track their progress and stay motivated to achieve personal fitness goals.

The ZenWatch 2 will retail at SGD $229 and will be available from 14th November 2015 onwards.

MARINA BAY CAPTIVATED AS SHARAPOVA AND CHANG PLAY ON SINGAPORE’S FIRST FLOATING TENNIS PLATFORM

SINGAPORE, OCTOBER 23, 2015 – TAG Heuer unveiled Singapore’s first floating tennis platform at Clifford Pier last night in front of hundreds of invited guests and members of the public who had gathered along the waterfront to catch a glimpse of the spectacle.

“This historic place is where many first generation Singaporeans first set foot. Today, we’re adding a footnote to that history by launching Singapore’s first floating tennis platform,” said Ms Amelia Sillard, Vice President of TAG Heuer Southeast Asia.

The star of the evening, world number three and TAG Heuer ambassador Maria Sharapova arrived on a boat to join former world number two Michael Chang at the floating platform where they treated all along the bay to a singles game. Chang, 43, showed he still had the moves that 26 years ago earned him the record for being the youngest male player to win a singles Grand Slam title. Having just recovered from a forearm injury that forced her out of Wuhan, Sharapova looked in good form as she moved effortlessly around the floating court and hit a few winners against Chang to win the game.

For Singaporean tennis players Angeline Devi Devanthiran, 19, and Shaheed Alam, 17, the highlight of the evening was being paired with Sharapova and Chang in a mixed-doubles game. With both pairs holding serve, the game went into an unusual tie-breaker with their combined service speeds determining the winners. The Singaporeans started the contest with Shaheed serving at 158km/h and Devanthiran at 120km/h. Chang went next with a 161km/h serve. With 123km/h as the speed to beat, Sharapova served 163km/h to take the game.

In the Charity Rally that followed, both pairs tried to keep the ball in play with TAG Heuer pledging $100 per rally to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The crowd watched in suspense as the longest of three rallies reached 181. Presenting a cheque of $18,100 to the Foundation’s Director of Development Ms Elaine Tan, Mr Luc Decroix, Vice President of Global Sales, TAG Heuer, said, “History is written in moments of adversity and in the superhuman will to overcome. That will exists not just in sport, but in everyday life, especially in the boys and girls of the Make-A-Wish Foundation who remain strong in the face of illness.”

Demonstrating that will was 8-year-old Joshua Ong who suffers from non-Hodgkin lymphoma and whose wish was to meet a real-life sports superstar. His wish was fulfilled when he presented the new TAG Heuer Limited Edition SG50 Aquaracer to Sharapova on court. The five-time world number one gave him a hug and an autographed HEAD tennis racquet.

At a press conference held later, she addressed questions on her readiness for the Finals saying, “I’m healthy now. I spent the last few weeks healing up and I came out here early to acclimatise.”

SINGAPORE, OCTOBER 21, 2015 –
TAG Heuer is building Singapore’s first ever floating tennis platform ahead of the WTA Finals in Singapore. Stretching out 35 by 17 metres across the water at Clifford Pier, and weighing up to 10 cars, the floating court will be unveiled on October 22 in what is promised to be an evening of sporting glamour and a key event on the fringe of the tournament.

The floating court will take 10 days to build and install, and will be the stage for an exhibition game between two tennis icons who have played the sport at the highest levels – five-time world number one and TAG Heuer ambassador Maria Sharapova, and former tennis player Michael Chang. Guests and the public can get up close to the action from the deck at Clifford Pier, while all along the bay, the floating court will offer a visual spectacle.

Hailed by tennis legend John McEnroe as “one of the greatest competitors our sport has ever seen,” Sharapova, who is currently in second place on the WTA leaderboard coming into the Finals, will be looking to bounce back from a forearm injury to register her first win in Singapore. She will arrive at the floating court in style, on a boat.

Chang, who is now coach to top Japanese player Kei Nishikori, still holds the record for being the youngest Grand Slam winner when he won the French Open in 1989 at the age of 17. He will take on Sharapova in a friendly mixed-doubles game. They will be paired with 19-year-old Angeline Devi Devanthiran and 17-year-old Shaheed Alam who both represented Singapore for the first time at the 28th SEA Games in June. There will also be a Charity Rally where TAG Heuer will donate $100 per rally in the longest rally played.

In addition, the event will see eight-year-old Joshua Wong’s wish come true. He will present the TAG Heuer limited edition SG50 Aquaracer to Sharapova on court in the presence of hundreds of guests.

The party will continue indoors with press conferences with Sharapova and Chang, as well as a TAG Heuer showcase, live music and other activities.

#Honestbee Raises US$15 million Funding As Part of Expansion Plans in Asia

Singapore, 20 October 2015 – honestbee, a fast-growing on-demand grocery concierge and delivery service company based in Singapore, today announced that it has successfully raised the first round of funding of US$15 million.

Participants in this round led by Formation 8 include:

  • Pejman Mar Ventures, early investors of Dropbox, Lending Club and DoorDash
  • Gideon Yu, former CFO of Facebook and YouTube, as well as the co-owner of the San Francisco 49ers
  • Owen T. Van Natta, founding team of Amazon’s search company A9.com and former COO of Facebook. He is currently also part of 415 Investments
  • Steve Chen, Google Ventures Advisor, as well as co-founder and former CTO of YouTube

“We are very excited and blessed to have been able to attract support from some of the most successful entrepreneurs and investors with unparalleled track records in the world. Honestbee will benefit tremendously, as we now have immediate access to the top minds who have built the most valuable technology companies in the world today, such as Amazon, YouTube, Google, Square, Dropbox, DoorDash and Palantir,” said co-founder, Isaac Tay.

“Formation 8 believes that the hyper-local on-demand market plays a significant role in the way commerce will evolve. Given the increasing population density across all the key cities in Asia due to job and wealth creation, this is right time and opportunity,” said Formation 8 founder, Brian Koo. “Consumers now demand higher levels of access to convenience. With honestbee’s superior partnership network and its strong focus on building a world class technology company, they will be well-positioned to quickly own this market.”

Partnerships

Honestbee partners with top supermarkets and specialty stores such as the largest grocery retailer in Singapore with NTUC FairPrice, the largest pet products company, Pet Lovers Center, as well as gourmet boutiques and specialty stores, Gastronomia Da Paolo, MMMM!, The Butcher’s Dog, Crystal Wines, GNC and Four Seasons Organic, in Singapore. This enables these traditional grocery companies to significantly increase their revenue through honestbee’s on-demand e-commerce platform where they fulfil customers’ orders in as little time as within the next hour, and becoming the retailer’s new best friend.

To drive this growth, honestbee has expanded its team to almost 100 people in just eight months, and continues to aggressively scout and hire the best talent from around the world. With aggressive plans to expand across Asia, honestbee expects to be in at least six other Tier 1 cities by June 2016.

Just last week, honestbee launched in Hong Kong, offering a one-stop shop for a range of products to meet the needs of busy customers.

Market Growth Potential

According to a Goldman Sachs report, the online grocery shopping market in Asia is currently estimated at US$18 billion with online carts typically being 1.8 times larger than store-based retail at checkout.

The willingness to use digital retailing options in the future is highest in the developing markets, with Asia Pacific at 60% in a recent Nielson report, signaling the great potential for growth in online grocery delivery services in the region.

In light of the potential, however, this space is under-penetrated, with intended providers facing challengers in both services and delivery.

honestbee’s solution to these challenges – a model that has proven successful in this sharing economy – is to utilize someone else’s spare time to shop and deliver groceries, thus freeing up customers to spend their time doing more of what they enjoy.

With a crowdsourced workforce, orders are fulfilled by concierge shoppers who shop at top supermarkets and boutiques stores, and a delivery team which brings the orders to customers’ homes, all within-the-next-hour golden time slots of choice. This eliminates the cost of infrastructure building, such as the need for warehousing, additional manpower and equipment. In return, honestbee brings increased efficiency and convenience to customers, as well as improved margins for partners.
