Singapore Road Safety Month 2017 – Stand a Chance to Win a Samsung Galaxy S8

Inline with the Singapore Road Safety Month,  Samsung Singapore is having a booth at Nex Shopping Center promoting their latest VR content – Eyes on the Road that aims to educate the public on the importance of staying focused while on the roads.

Encouraging Safe Driving among Road Users

Although the number of fatal accidents has decreased by 5.4 percent from 2015 to 2016, the number of injury accidents has seen a rise of 2.7 percent in 2016 as compared to 2015. To help reduce the number of traffic incidents caused by distractions from mobile devices, Samsung’s Eyes on the Road VR content features different dangerous scenarios to discourage the use of mobile devices while on the road. For example, a scenario plays out whereby the user, experiencing the point of view of a driver, almost gets into an accident at a pedestrian crossing due to distractions from his mobile device.

Instagram user @weewu was trying out the Eyes On the Road with Samsung Gear VR.

DBS PAYLAH! In Singapore To Launch QR Code Payments

All DBS PayLah! users, including non-DBS/POSB customers, now have the ability to transact via QR codes across 10,000 NETS terminals by year end

SINGAPORE, 13 April 2017 – DBS today announced another ground-breaking payment solution in support of Singapore’s Smart Nation drive to adopt cashless payments. In a Singapore first, all DBS PayLah! users – including non-DBS/POSB customers – now have the ability to generate their own QR code to receive funds, and can also pay by scanning QR codes. DBS PayLah! is Singapore’s top mobile wallet with some 500,000 users and counting.

The introduction of DBS PayLah!’s QR code capability has far-reaching implications for merchants and consumers here. Despite the continuing drive to encourage businesses here to adopt cashless payments, many small businesses remain averse as they see the leasing of payment terminals, connectivity and wiring requirements as inconvenient and costly. In Singapore, it is estimated that more than 80% of payments made at small shops are in cash. At hawker centres and wet markets, this rises to 90%. The lack of ubiquity in cashless payment acceptance by merchants in turn discourages consumers from making the transition to cashless payments.

DBS PayLah!’s QR code payments are particularly effective in tackling these issues as it has a very low barrier to entry. There is little to no cost involved and the process of using QR codes to transact is extremely streamlined. To receive payments, merchants or individuals can use DBS PayLah! to generate their own QR code, which they can display at their premises or send to others via social or online channels for payments. To pay, customers simply need to use DBS PayLah! to scan the QR code and proceed to make a payment.

The simplicity of the QR code solution empowers offline merchants, helping them connect to the online world, and allows them to establish a point-to-point connection to their customers. In China, QR codes have driven the adoption of cashless payments and the country is today the world’s leader in mobile payments. The value of Chinese third-party mobile payments was estimated to be RMB 38 trillion in 2016.

Said Jeremy Soo, Head of Consumer Banking Group (Singapore), DBS Bank (星展银行新加坡消费银行部董事总经理兼主管苏孝进), “We believe that cashless payments in Singapore is ripe for disruption. Singapore has one of the world’s highest smartphone penetration and surveys have indicated that the majority of consumers here are open to making payments with their mobile devices. All we need is a solution that has a low barrier to entry, is easy for merchants to implement, and for consumers to use. The DBS PayLah! QR code solution ticks all the boxes and is well positioned to drive cashless payment behaviour in Singapore, taking us one step closer to our nation’s vision of being a Smart Nation.”

In another industry first, DBS PayLah! users will also soon be able to make QR code payments on NETS terminals at a number of merchants across various categories which include transport, retail, fashion and F&B. Some 2,000 NETS terminals will be enabled with this capability in the next two months and 10,000 by the end of the year. In addition, DBS will be holding a QR code bazaar from 5 to 7 May to encourage more consumers and businesses to adopt cashless payments. The event will be the first of its kind in Singapore, with some 200 young vendors setting up shop at *SCAPE. All vendors at the event will be able to accept purchases made via DBS PayLah!’s QR code payment function.

Garmin sets up Singapore as South-east Asia HQ for its consumer business

Singapore, February 7, 2017 — A familiar brand in Singapore, Garmin’s consumer products have been sold here through distributors since the early 1990s. As part of the brand’s strategic plan to strengthen their presence in the region, Garmin will now be directly managing the sales and marketing of its consumer business devices in the Southeast Asia and India region.

Singapore was selected as the regional headquarters for Garmin’s regional expansion because of the nation’s vibrant pro-business environment, political stability, centralised geography and strong infrastructure.

The company has appointed Mr. Engelhard (Al) Sundoro as Managing Director for the South Asia/ India Region since January 2017. Mr. Sundoro brings with him a wealth of experience having worked with Garmin International in America since 2007. Mr. Sundoro will manage Garmin’s consumer business in six South-east Asian countries (Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand) and India and its marine business in South-east Asia, China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and India.

“As a company, we need to be an enduring brand that consistently innovates. In order to do that, it is essential for us to be closer to our customers to understand what they need. Even as a global brand, Garmin sees each market differently as the customer needs in each region is diverse. Outside of US, China and Taiwan, it is a natural step for the brand to strengthen our presence in South-east Asia with Singapore as our headquarters as consumers here tend to be early adopters of technology,” said Mr. Al Sundoro, Managing Director for South Asia/ India Region.

Garmin has a strong foundation in engineering products for aviation and marine since 1989. With engineering a fundamental part of the brand’s DNA, innovation, precision and attention to details are ingrained in the products designed by the brand.

Aiming to engineer quality wearables to complement the daily active lifestyles of users, Garmin recently announced its partnership with EZ-Link to launch a special version of its vívosmart HR activity tracker with built-in NFC contactless payment smarts. Users can tap their fitness band to make payment for train and bus rides, cab rides and retail purchases in Singapore.

“Working with partners such as EZ-Link to make our products more meaningful to consumers in each locale is an example of what we want to do with our business here,” added Mr. Sundoro.

M1, Singtel, StarHub Use GSMA’s Mobile Connect For Unified, Secured, Mobile-based Authentication for Singapore

Singapore, 29 November 2016 – All Singapore consumers will be able to enjoy fast, simple and secure access to a variety of online services with their mobile number when M1, Singtel and StarHub adopt the GSMA’s Mobile Connect authentication standard.

The internet offers unprecedented access to information and services. Many of the best services also require their users to register, which inconveniences them. According to the GSMA, 87% of consumers leave a website when asked to register. Additionally, they also face difficulties remembering their growing list of usernames and passwords, with 40% using the “forget password” feature monthly.

Mobile Connect will free customers from having to manage multiple usernames and passwords for every online account. With Mobile Connect, mobile customers can look forward to creating a universal trusted digital identity for convenient and secure access to compatible telecommunications, banking, e-commerce, entertainment, government and travel services and applications.

Through interactive prompts on the mobile phone, customers will be able to easily confirm their identity using their mobile number, combined with a unique personal code for online transactions that require greater levels of security. No information will be made available to online service providers without users’ permission.

Accepting Mobile Connect logins will benefit online service providers too. They will be able to offer simpler sign-ups, reduce customer frustration and abandoned transactions due to authentication issues, and increase the likelihood of repeat business.

To drive rollout and adoption, M1, Singtel and StarHub are building a unified platform to enable easy integration with online service providers through a common Mobile Connect Application Programme Interface (API). M1, Singtel and StarHub expect to announce the first wave of supported online services in the second half of 2017.

Mobile Connect is developed by the GSMA and currently available in 22 countries.

The winning entry, Rotasi, is about a photographer who is feuding with his best friend and his girlfriend. Due to this unhappy state of affairs, he loses faith in the enduring rotation of the earth as he seems to be somehow stuck in love and life. In the end however, he goes through a journey that restores his faith.

The runner-up, Pagnanakaw, is the story about a devoted young man tasked to travel every day to a faraway shop to buy tofu for his family. The container he brings with him is small and only gets filled with a few pieces, just enough for a day. While faithfully carrying out his daily duty, he often wonders why he’s not allowed to bring a bigger container in order to make his journeys more efficient. One day, however, his tofu-fetching task throws up an illuminating answer to life.

Two “People’s Choice” awards were also given out during the awards ceremony. Indonesia’s Mr Destian Rendra also received US$3K for winning the popular vote for Rotasi, while Thailand’s Mr Yuttana Kanchanapinpong of Hello Gorgeous collected the runner-up cash prize of US$2K.

The winners, runners-up and finalists’ videos will be screened on the Group’s mobile and video platforms across Asia, Africa and Australia, reaching about 630 million customers.
