ASUS ZenWatch 2

The ZenWatch 2 is ASUS’ latest entry in the Zen-inspired line of wearables. The elegantly designed ZenWatch 2 uses a stainless-steel casing and features a hand-polished finishing. To top off its timeless look, the digital crown is designed to look like its traditional dress watch counterpart.

A metal crown button adorns the case, similar to traditional watch styling and providing a quick way to access apps and turn the screen on or off. The watch crystal is designed with a gentle curve for an elegant look and improved usability by providing a smooth surface for easy and responsive swiping gestures. It is made from tough Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3 for protection against scratches and damage.

Highly Personal and Customisable

The ZenWatch 2 is available with a wide range of straps in a variety of materials and colours for further personalisation. A tough yet supple rubber strap is available which makes it the perfect choice for athletes, users with active lifestyles, or those who prefer a more casual look. Smart Assistant App

Powered by the latest version of Android Wear, the ZenWatch 2 is a smart assistant for Android and iOS smartphones providing wearers with a convenient, at-a-glance view of incoming calls, messages, notifications, and other important information without having to remove their phone from their pocket or bag. The ZenWatch 2 comes with a wide-range of software features, including ASUS ZenUI apps, Business Helper, FoneHelper, Remote Camera, and ZenWatch Message.

The ZenWatch 2 seamlessly integrates with the ZenUI on the ASUS smartphones, allowing wearers enjoy wearable-optimised ZenUI apps, such as What’s Next and Do It Later. What’s Next keeps wearers informed of important information as they need to know it, such as details of their next upcoming appointment or the weather at their next destination. The Do It Later feature allows wearers defer events such as incoming phone calls and messages by automatically adding them to a list of reminders, so they can stay focused on their current task.

ZenWatch 2 introduces Business Helper, a suite of features to assist wearers with common businessrelated tasks, such as checking their agendas, managing email, and viewing their call logs. In addition to the Business Helper, the ZenWatch 2 comes with an improved version of FoneHelper, a collection of features including Quick Settings, Cover to Mute, Unlock My Phone, and Forgot Phone Warning that are designed to provide a more convenient and enjoyable smartphone experience.

The Remote Camera function provide wearers with the ability to display their smartphone’s camera viewfinder on their ZenWatch 2. This frees them to take photos from creative angles where the viewfinder would be difficult to see, such as when holding their phone overhead at a concert or other crowded event. Remote Camera is also useful for group photos, letting the photographer compose the photo, release the shutter, and check the final result while being included in the shot. The Remote Camera function offers faster performance, greater range, the ability to switch between the phone’s front and rear cameras, plus zoom capability.

The ZenWatch Message is a fun new watch-to-watch communication app that allows wearers to exchange short messages, emojis, and drawings with other ZenWatch 2 wearers right from their wrists. In addition to software improvements, the ZenWatch 2 comes with an enhanced battery that provides up to two days of use on a single charge. An all-new magnetic charger effortlessly attaches to the ZenWatch 2 and it takes just 36 minutes to charge the ZenWatch
2 from zero to 50% capacity.

Advanced Wellness Manager

Comfortable to wear all day and built with sophisticated sensors, the ZenWatch 2 works together with the completely redesigned Wellness smartphone app to provide a comprehensive solution for managing fitness. The ZenWatch 2 is a full-featured activity tracker with a built-in pedometer that provides industry leading step-counting accuracy to give wearers a clear and precise picture of their activity level. Its IP67 water-resistant case is impervious to sweat, so wearers can use the ZenWatch 2 to track even their most vigorous workouts.

A new workout coaching feature tracks a variety of activity types including walking, running, push-ups, and sit-ups, letting wearers set goals for each workout. The ZenWatch 2 monitors the workout, provides feedback along the way, and notifies wearers with a congratulatory notification when they meet their goal. Furthermore, it helps wearers stay active throughout the day by providing reminders to get up and move at regular intervals.

With the Wellness smartphone app, wearers can open the Wellness app on their smartphone to see all of their activity information organised in one convenient location. It displays daily and weekly activity summaries, presented as attractive, easy-to-understand timelines and charts to help wearers track their progress and stay motivated to achieve personal fitness goals.

The ZenWatch 2 will retail at SGD $229 and will be available from 14th November 2015 onwards.

MARINA BAY CAPTIVATED AS SHARAPOVA AND CHANG PLAY ON SINGAPORE’S FIRST FLOATING TENNIS PLATFORM

SINGAPORE, OCTOBER 23, 2015 – TAG Heuer unveiled Singapore’s first floating tennis platform at Clifford Pier last night in front of hundreds of invited guests and members of the public who had gathered along the waterfront to catch a glimpse of the spectacle.

“This historic place is where many first generation Singaporeans first set foot. Today, we’re adding a footnote to that history by launching Singapore’s first floating tennis platform,” said Ms Amelia Sillard, Vice President of TAG Heuer Southeast Asia.

The star of the evening, world number three and TAG Heuer ambassador Maria Sharapova arrived on a boat to join former world number two Michael Chang at the floating platform where they treated all along the bay to a singles game. Chang, 43, showed he still had the moves that 26 years ago earned him the record for being the youngest male player to win a singles Grand Slam title. Having just recovered from a forearm injury that forced her out of Wuhan, Sharapova looked in good form as she moved effortlessly around the floating court and hit a few winners against Chang to win the game.

For Singaporean tennis players Angeline Devi Devanthiran, 19, and Shaheed Alam, 17, the highlight of the evening was being paired with Sharapova and Chang in a mixed-doubles game. With both pairs holding serve, the game went into an unusual tie-breaker with their combined service speeds determining the winners. The Singaporeans started the contest with Shaheed serving at 158km/h and Devanthiran at 120km/h. Chang went next with a 161km/h serve. With 123km/h as the speed to beat, Sharapova served 163km/h to take the game.

In the Charity Rally that followed, both pairs tried to keep the ball in play with TAG Heuer pledging $100 per rally to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The crowd watched in suspense as the longest of three rallies reached 181. Presenting a cheque of $18,100 to the Foundation’s Director of Development Ms Elaine Tan, Mr Luc Decroix, Vice President of Global Sales, TAG Heuer, said, “History is written in moments of adversity and in the superhuman will to overcome. That will exists not just in sport, but in everyday life, especially in the boys and girls of the Make-A-Wish Foundation who remain strong in the face of illness.”

Demonstrating that will was 8-year-old Joshua Ong who suffers from non-Hodgkin lymphoma and whose wish was to meet a real-life sports superstar. His wish was fulfilled when he presented the new TAG Heuer Limited Edition SG50 Aquaracer to Sharapova on court. The five-time world number one gave him a hug and an autographed HEAD tennis racquet.

At a press conference held later, she addressed questions on her readiness for the Finals saying, “I’m healthy now. I spent the last few weeks healing up and I came out here early to acclimatise.”

My Trip to Hokkaido – Review of Yokoso Sim

These days, 4G has become an inseparable part of our lives. Even when we go overseas, we will buy a pre-paid local sim card so that we can surf while sightseeing. In most countries, getting a pre-paid sim is easy. However, in Japan, as most of you know, it could be kind of tricky. If I didn’t remember wrongly, you can’t even get a call-only sim card in Japan under the country’s telco regulation.

Fortunately, there are many 3rd party distributors that sell pre-paid data-only sim outside Japan and Yokoso Sim is one of them.

Why did I choose Yokoso Sim in the first place?

Frankly, this was the first time I am trying out Japan’s 4G network and I chose Yokoso Sim based on my friend’s recommendations:

  • Yokoso Sim uses NTT Docomo ‘s network. (NTT is an incumbent telephone service provider in Japan just like Singtel is in Singapore.) Judging from the scale of the company, its coverage should quite extensive.
  • Local representatives in Singapore. I am not a patient shopper where I can wait for days for my item to arrive after I have made the purchase. On top of that, I prefer to speak to a person directly so that I could get my queries answered fast. So, having a local representative always appeal to me.
  • Unlimited usage. Fast 4G browsing is limited to the first 135MB per day. Once breached, the service continues but at a reduced speed of 200kps.
  • Reasonable pricing. The 7-day 4G card is selling at SGD35 which is very competitive among other distributors.

If you want to find out more about Yokoso Sim card, you may wish to drop a mail to Mr Shinji Matsudaira at  shinji.matsudaira@yokososim.com or visit the facebook page here

Experience with Yokoso Sim Activation

Unlike other pre-paid sim you get from some countries; you could do the activation yourself as long as you know the APN settings. I have listed it down below for your reference.

  • APN:             so-net.jp
  • Username:        nuro
  • Password:        nuro
  • Authentication:     PAP or CHAP

Note: If you are using Android phone, you would need to give a name for the APN. In this case, just give any name of your preference

I have been researching quite a bit on the phone compatibility with Japan networks. Generally, iPhone/iPad are not a problem. I have read on a Chinese site the limitations on activating on some phones. Basically, most smartphones are compatible except for HTC, Xiaomi, Mainland China-branded Phones, Blackberry and Windows Phone.

I guess for most people, this will not be a problem. If you are carrying your spare Chinese brand phones for your Japan trip which is not compatible with the NTT Docomo network, you might wish to try the following:

First, activate the sim card on a Apple device (refer to the manual that comes along with the sim card). During this trip, we brought an iPad Mini, Blackberry Passport, Blackberry Classic and OPPO Find 7. Yes, you are right! Most of our devices are not compatible according to the website. So what’s next for us? Since we have no choice (trust me! We tried to activate the service using non-Apple mobile devices. It does not work!), we activate the service using our iPad Mini (I believe any other Apple mobile devices could do) It does not come to us as a surprise that it works.

Next, take out the activated sim card and insert into your phone. You should have 4G connection**

**During our trip, we tried the same method for our OPPO Find 7 (a Chinese phone) and Blackberry phones. It works well.

Mobile Hotspot and Converge

Creating mobile hotspot is common when you are traveling in groups. However, this isn’t the case for our Hokkaido trip. We rely a lot on Google map for navigation and having a device with a bigger screen makes a lot of sense. As such, we dedicated the sim card to our iPad Mini. Then came another problem. We could not tether to our iPad Mini as NTT Docomo does not allow the creation of mobile hotspot. However, this restriction only seems to apply to Apple products. We tried tethering on our Blackberry and OPPO phones successfully. Point to note – don’t rely your iPad and iPhone for tethering.

According to NTT, below shows the coverage of 4G network in Hokkaido. Orange and Red refers to the coverage

If you understand Japanese, you may get more information from the website https://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/support/area/hokkaido/index.html

Based on the above, most of the places I went to are covered. Google map worked extremely well when we were doing our nature tour. The signal strength and speed are generally good even at nature parks and mountains. In the cities, speed and accessibility are definitely better. However, I didn’t experience blazing fast 4G speed when comes to uploading and posting on Instagram and Facebook. Maybe I am a pampered Singaporean that has a certain expectation of what an actual 4G speed like. So far, Hoheikyo Dam is the only place that I did not have any signal.

Verdict

Activation process is straight forward if you are using an iPhone or iPad. If you are using other phones, you may run a risk of not able to activate the service. Although there is a work-around (which I have shared earlier), it makes the process less seamless and user-friendly.

If you plan to travel in large group, I will suggest that you obtain 4G router directly from the distributer. Price might be higher but it saves the hassle of having to activate the sim card and having to swap the sim card between devices.

Coverage wise, I think that Japan 4G coverage is far much better than most countries I’ve been to.

Tableau Launches Vizable, A Breakthrough Mobile App for Data Exploration

Free iPad App Makes Data Analytics Fun and Accessible to More People

Singapore – October 21, 2015
Tableau Software
(NYSE: DATA) today announced Vizable, an entirely new mobile application designed to help people see and understand data with just an iPad. Tableau Vice President of Mobile and Strategic Growth, Dave Story, unveiled the app at the 2015 Tableau Conference in Las Vegas.

With Vizable, Tableau brings fun and approachable data analysis to even more people. The free iPad app makes it possible to explore data by using gestures such as pinching, swiping and dragging, allowing people to sculpt data into visualizations in seconds.

Tableau has already put Vizable in the hands of a number of businesses and organizations who previously had data and questions, but no easy tool to answer those questions. They now find insights to drive and improve their business, even while they’re on the go.

“We started with a food truck, so the very nature of our business is mobile,” said Roz Edison, owner of Marination, a Hawaiian-Korean fusion cuisine business with one food truck and two restaurants in Seattle. “Since we’ve started using Vizable, if someone asks me how Marination is doing this week, I can pull out my iPad, start swiping and dragging my cash register data, and boom! It’s that easy.”

“There is no great app to see and understand a spreadsheet visually, using only a tablet,” said

Story. “This is an incredibly common scenario. Whether you’re a teacher with students’ test data, a small business with the day’s sales, a cyclist with ride stats, or an executive with the past hour’s web site traffic – Vizable brings analytics to more people by engaging them with their data like never before.”

Vizable is ideal for people with personal or business data they want to analyze. The first version works with data in CSV files and Excel (xls or xlsx) files. Visualizations created in Vizable can be shared with friends and colleagues through email, instant message, or social media.

Vizable is currently available worldwide in the Apple iTunes store in English. It supports data in many international formats today, and will be translated to other languages in the future.
