Turkey Trip – Review of Alldaywifi’s Mobile Internet

For those who know me, I have been traveling to many places ever since I stepped out from university and mostly, I planned my own trips. Planning your own itinerary is tedious – a lot of reading on the travel forum and chatting with your contacts who have been there.

As a rule of thumb, you always must plan for contingency. For me, having mobile internet access is a must because when things do not go according to plan, I can always ask the oracle over the internet a.k.a Google.

It is not hard to buy a Travel 4G card in Singapore and the price is quite reasonable. Usually, I will recommend people to buy the 4G card beforehand so that you could save the hassle of getting one abroad.

However, you can’t get all the 4G cards in this small country and that’s the challenge I faced when I was planning for my trip to Turkey – I can’t find any compatible 4G Sim card in Singapore! On top of that, Google does not seem to be helpful where there isn’t much discussion in the forum on the 4G card in Turkey (maybe the information is there but in Turkish).

Why did I choose alldaywifi?

alldaywifi’s pocket WIFI. Source: Instagram user @weewu

Unlimited data usage: If you run a check on the internet, the prices of the pre-paid sim cards offered by the 3 main telcos in Turkey are about the same and they don’t offer unlimited usage. alldaywifi’s unlimited mobile data usage saves the hassle of topping up.

Sharing Via Mobile Hotspot: alldaywifi provides user with a mobile router which makes it easy to share internet access with your travel companions. If you are traveling with a sizeable number of people, this is in fact a cheaper option than buying a pre-paid sim card. Since you are not using the 4G services on your phone, you could save more battery life on your phone to take more pictures and videos of your trips.

Free Delivery to hotel: Once you have placed your order, you can choose to collect the device at any hotel in Istanbul. What’s better, the delivery is free-of-charge.

User’s Experience

The package consists of a charger, USB cable, instructions and of course the mobile router. They are all packed in a small bag. The instructions are all written on a pile of plastic cards. Each card contains one instruction and it is very easy to follow.

Setting up does not take more than a minute. Seconds after, your Wi-Fi is ready for connection.

At the end of your trip, all you need to do is to keep the entire package in a plastic bag provided and leave it with the hotel receptionist upon checking out.

 Internet Speed and battery life

Alldaywifi is using Vodafone, one of the 3 main telcos in Turkey. Coverage-wise is generally up-to-mark and we didn’t have any issue with instagramming and broadcasting via Facebook Live outside of Istanbul.

Check up the Facebook Live video I took on a hot air balloon ride at Cappadocia.

Altogether, there were only 2 of us (poisonvine.com and myself) using the alldaywifi’s router. As such, the battery usage of the mobile router was not high. Furthermore, we switched it off while we were on the roads and only turned it on at the site. It lasted us a good whole day.

If you are a mobile phone addict who needs to be online all the time, you can connect the router to your power bank (I am very sure all mobile phone addicts carry one). The alldaywifi’s router has micro-USB port which most of the smartphones have; so there shouldn’t be any problem with charging.

Verdicts

If you are going to travel in small groups to Turkey, alldaywifi is definitely value-for-money when you are calculating your cost of mobile data usage on the per-pax basis.

It is very convenient. You could do all the registration online before you go for the trip so that you don’t need to spend time to hunt for 4G cards at arrival.

DBS PAYLAH! In Singapore To Launch QR Code Payments

All DBS PayLah! users, including non-DBS/POSB customers, now have the ability to transact via QR codes across 10,000 NETS terminals by year end

SINGAPORE, 13 April 2017 – DBS today announced another ground-breaking payment solution in support of Singapore’s Smart Nation drive to adopt cashless payments. In a Singapore first, all DBS PayLah! users – including non-DBS/POSB customers – now have the ability to generate their own QR code to receive funds, and can also pay by scanning QR codes. DBS PayLah! is Singapore’s top mobile wallet with some 500,000 users and counting.

The introduction of DBS PayLah!’s QR code capability has far-reaching implications for merchants and consumers here. Despite the continuing drive to encourage businesses here to adopt cashless payments, many small businesses remain averse as they see the leasing of payment terminals, connectivity and wiring requirements as inconvenient and costly. In Singapore, it is estimated that more than 80% of payments made at small shops are in cash. At hawker centres and wet markets, this rises to 90%. The lack of ubiquity in cashless payment acceptance by merchants in turn discourages consumers from making the transition to cashless payments.

DBS PayLah!’s QR code payments are particularly effective in tackling these issues as it has a very low barrier to entry. There is little to no cost involved and the process of using QR codes to transact is extremely streamlined. To receive payments, merchants or individuals can use DBS PayLah! to generate their own QR code, which they can display at their premises or send to others via social or online channels for payments. To pay, customers simply need to use DBS PayLah! to scan the QR code and proceed to make a payment.

The simplicity of the QR code solution empowers offline merchants, helping them connect to the online world, and allows them to establish a point-to-point connection to their customers. In China, QR codes have driven the adoption of cashless payments and the country is today the world’s leader in mobile payments. The value of Chinese third-party mobile payments was estimated to be RMB 38 trillion in 2016.

Said Jeremy Soo, Head of Consumer Banking Group (Singapore), DBS Bank (星展银行新加坡消费银行部董事总经理兼主管苏孝进), “We believe that cashless payments in Singapore is ripe for disruption. Singapore has one of the world’s highest smartphone penetration and surveys have indicated that the majority of consumers here are open to making payments with their mobile devices. All we need is a solution that has a low barrier to entry, is easy for merchants to implement, and for consumers to use. The DBS PayLah! QR code solution ticks all the boxes and is well positioned to drive cashless payment behaviour in Singapore, taking us one step closer to our nation’s vision of being a Smart Nation.”

In another industry first, DBS PayLah! users will also soon be able to make QR code payments on NETS terminals at a number of merchants across various categories which include transport, retail, fashion and F&B. Some 2,000 NETS terminals will be enabled with this capability in the next two months and 10,000 by the end of the year. In addition, DBS will be holding a QR code bazaar from 5 to 7 May to encourage more consumers and businesses to adopt cashless payments. The event will be the first of its kind in Singapore, with some 200 young vendors setting up shop at *SCAPE. All vendors at the event will be able to accept purchases made via DBS PayLah!’s QR code payment function.

Poisonvine.com’s review on Sudio Regent Wireless Headphones

Sudio has released their latest product – Sudio Regent Wireless Headphones. We managed to get hold of a unit for review. Instead of writing about how we feel about the product, we’ve decided to do something different this time and get a female blogger  (poisonvine.com) to share with us her experience after using this product.

Q1. Have you heard of Sudio? What’s your first impression when you first got hold of the Sudio Regent?

I first got to know about Sudio until they launched the Sudio Vasa Blå. It left a very strong impression on me because the earphones looked stunning!

Sudio Regent exemplifies the Sudio’s design philosophy – minimalist, elegant and timeless. It’s definitely a beautiful headphone that you would want to show off to your friends.

Q2. Which genre do you usually listen to? And does the sound profile meet your expectations?

I listen to a rather wide variety of genres so it’s a bit difficult to say. For instrumentals, I prefer artists like Kenny G, Keiko Matsui, Kaori Kobayashi and Jessy J. For vocals, I like Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Michael Bublé, Il Divo, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige and Toni Braxton.

Anyway, I find that the Sudio Regent generally performs well for instrumentals, there is good clarity and balance. Unfortunately, the bass is a little weaker than I would like. For vocals, I find that the sound quality tends to be a bit airy.

A post shared by Neo Wee Wu 梁威武 (@weewu) on

Q3. What’s the best (or worst) experience you had while using this product?

I like that the Sudio Regent offers both Bluetooth and wired option, which makes it very versatile and is ideal for travelling. The headphone is light and foldable, making it very portable. In addition, you can change the caps on the headphone and match the headphones to your OOTD.

The headphones sits on the ear and is generally quite comfortable. However, after prolonged usage, the headphone will start to feel a bit too tight for my head (maybe because I have a big head?) But for commuting I would not expect to wear this continuously for over an hour so it’s not a big issue.

Q4. Considering all factors: Design, features, sound quality and price, how do you rate the product?

I would give it a 6.5/10. It is definitely worthy of a consideration if you are in the market for portable headphones.

Availability

The Sudio Regent is available in two colors, black and white and retails for S$229.

If you are in Singapore, you will get a 20% off that price because of tax rebates. After the 20%, it becomes S$183.20.

Using my promo code “neodimension” at their site, it will give you an additional 15% discount. So in total, you pay just S$155.72 for the Sudio Regent.

On top of that, you will receive a free express shipping and a phone case.

Smartphone Market Maintains Growth in South East Asia in 16Q2; Samsung, OPPO, True and ASUS Dominate

According to the latest International Data Corporation (IDC) Asia/Pacific Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, total smartphone shipments in the South East Asia (SEA) region is approximately 28 million units in the second quarter of 2016 reflecting an 18.1% increase quarter-on quarter (QoQ) and continued positive growth year-on-year (YoY) of 6.5%. Countries in the SEA region tracked by IDC’s local and regional analysts are Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The report states that competitive price points and heavy marketing activities in a now crowded market are the key driving factors for the budget conscious SEA market.

In terms of market share, the overall smartphone market remains dominated by Samsung, followed by OPPO, True (an operator in Thailand), Asus and Lava.

  • Samsung retained its top position by relying on its price and spec competitive Galaxy J series which was highly suited for the budget conscious SEA market. Meanwhile, the flagship Galaxy S7 series saw better YoY performance in terms of unit shipments compared to the Galaxy S6 series launched back in 2015.
  • OPPO moved to second position for the first time. Despite Oppo’s continued marketing investments to build a solid brand equity for its F1 family, it was the Neo model that drove up its volume.
  • Asus’ position is supported by its highly affordable Zenfone Go model. Meanwhile, the growth of its flagship, the Zenfone 2 Laser, slowed down in preparation for the new Zenfone 3 targeted for launch in the third quarter.
  • Unit shipments for True and Lava were propelled by heavy operator activities to increase 3G subscribers nationwide in Thailand.

Meanwhile, 3G handsets still make up majority of the market share as they carry significantly lower price points as opposed to 4G ones, a pivotal factor particularly for SEA consumers. Furthermore, the slow uptake of 4G is largely attributed to the temporary rise of 3G devices in Thailand, where operators were in a rush to migrate subscribers from 2G to 3G, handing out large amounts of free or heavily discounted handsets.
