Guest Writer Shares Her First Impression of Sony A7III

In the past, we see brands were introducing complicated, professional features into cameras, which as a regular consumer, we would like to get our hand on it to make our beautiful photos, but the price of these high-end cameras are just way too expensive for armature to own one to use it for leisure purpose.

As the technology advance and the growth of the photography enthusiasts, all thanks to the mobile phone camera, camera makers must be innovative and advanced in creating camera with features which can create more wonders and bring back the pleasure of taking photos with a proper camera.

The acclaimed Eye AF feature has been made available for this camera, even in AF-C mode, which is extremely useful for situation where the subject is turning around, looking down or otherwise obstructed.

It tracks the movements of the subject’s in an incredible speed that allows the shots to be always in focused.

The new A7III is also equipped with an updated image processing system that allows it to shoot in full resolution images at up to 10fps with continuous, accurate AF/AE tracking for up to 177 Standard JPEG images or 89 compressed RAW images or 40 uncompressed RAW images

What this means is that you could take multiple shots of a fast-moving subject without compromising the image’s resolutions.

Well, the Sony’s Eye AF technology is unique in the world of cameras. The A7III is not just good in taking pictures. The new A7III is capable of taking 4K HDR video –  an enhancement from the A7II. You could capture important moments in high quality 4K resolutions!

Packed with so many advanced features, you might wonder about the storage capability of the camera. The A7III comes with dual SD card slots; in case one is full, you still have another one as backup. Worry no more!

For better management of data-intensive images and videos, the Sony A7III is also equipped with a USB Type C that could facilitate faster transfer of files as well as shorter charging time of the device.

I have rather good impression of the Sony’s A7III. It is supposed to be a “more-basic” model but seems to me that this device is packed with advanced features that are previously available in higher-end models. In short, it should be a good travel companion that could capture memorable moments.

New Sony Xperia’s Series Smartphones Impressed The Market With 3D Scanning Capabilities

Sony Mobile Communications Singapore launched three smartphone innovations in Singapore, the Sony Xperia XZ1, Xperia XZ1 Compact and Xperia XA1 Plus.

The Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact will be among the first smartphones to launch with Android 8.0 (Oreo), available exclusively for at all Sony Store, Sony Centre and on Lazada Singapore website.

These flagship models along with the super midrange Xperia XA1 Plus, will officially launch on 7 October at authorised local retailers.

The new Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact target at the mid to premium segment of the market (RPP SGD 898 and SGD 688) whereas the Xperia XA1 Plus is designed for the more budget-conscious consumers (RPP SGD498) .

Let’s just zoom in to what’s on the plate for the new Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact.

Super Low Motion: Following through the success of their predecessor Xperia XZ Premium, both devices are equipped with Sony’s Motion Eye cameras that allow video recording at super slow motion. In case you are new to the Sony’s Motion Eye technology,  the “Predictive Capture”, as the name suggested, actually captures the images before the user tap on the shutter button of the camera; this means that it is highly unlikely that you will miss the moment for the perfect shot.

3D Scan: I think this is the highlight of the new Xperia. For the first time, we see 3D technology built-in to the smartphone. Sony has developed in-house algorithm that are able to generate high quality 3D scans of objects in just one minute using four scan modes; head scan, face scan, food scan and freeform scan.

The 3D renders can be shared via messenger apps as stickers or online 3D communities such as Sketchfab. They can also be brought to life as fun avatars using the camera’s AR effects option, 3rd party apps or set as a one-of-a-kind live wallpaper. Those interested in creating memorable keepsakes may also easily send their scans directly to 3D printing companies like Shapeways.

Difference between Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact

Notably, both phones are armed with Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processors and 4GM RAM so in terms of speed and performance, these 2 devices are essentially the same.

The key difference lies on the front facing camera – The Xperia XZ1 sports a 13MP camera higher than the 8MP camera on the Xperia XZ1 Compact. This may matter to those who do a lot of video conferencing or selfie with their phone.

When comes to the display, both devices are packed with Sony’s proprietary TRILUMINOS technology which is modified from Sony TV display technology.  However, the Xperia XZ1 has a bigger 5.2 -inch IPS LCD than the Xperia XZ1 Compact’s 4.6 – inch IPS LCD.  In addition, the resolution on the XZ1 (424ppi) is higher than XZ1 Compact (319ppi). If you are super anal about the display, this is something that you need to know.

A Swedish Company is Trying to Improve Singapore’s Retail Sector

Axis Communications (Axis, stock quote: STO:AXIS ), a Swedish maker of network cameras, aims to redefine local brick-and-mortar store operations and customer engagement, with the launch of its video network solution today. The new solution offers HD TV image quality, intelligent video functions and analytic capabilities. These will support retailers in their efforts to remain productive, reduce manpower reliance, gain consumer insights, and ultimately, win back customers from e-commerce players.

“The consumer shift from brick-and-mortar stores to e-commerce have undeniably impacted traditional retailers. However, we believe that brick-and-mortar shops still have a competitive edge over e-tailers, and that is the human aspect of a shopping experience,” said Mr Magnus Zederfeldt, Director, South Asia Pacific, Axis Communications. “Customers want authentic experiences today, and it is thus imperative for traditional retailers to leverage emerging technologies to enhance this. If implemented effectively, brick-and-mortar stores can flourish.”

Magnus Zederfeldt, Regional Director South Asia Pacific Axis Communications. Source: Instagram user @weewu

Key highlights of Axis’ network video solution

Axis’ network video solution is capable of helping retailers in two key aspects:

1.    Enhanced security

  • Axis network video solution provides high resolution store-wide image coverage that enables retailers to follow any suspicious behaviour inside and outside store, even after operating hours.
  • The new solution is able to distribute HD TV video over any kind of IP network or the internet, assisting investigators with crime and positive identification.

2.    Enhanced customer experience

  • When placed strategically, the network cameras can assist retailers in recording, measuring and better understanding consumer activity and buying behaviour.
  • Retailers will be able to identify the popular areas in-store and optimise the store and display layouts accordingly.

Axis’ had previously launch its retail solution in the region, and some of its key customers  include Hang Ten in Taiwan, and Volkswagen in China. Customers have feedback that the solution has not only helped to effectively reduce its operational costs, but also raised in-store surveillance and employee productivity.

“Competition against huge e-commerce players, such as Alibaba and Amazon, are heating up. As such, Singapore retailers must focus on delivering greater value to consumers through the implementation of digital initiatives in stores. This will enable local store owners to stand against e-tailers, and bring about enhanced experience for consumers,” said Mr Zederfeldt.

Review of Sony Xperia XZ – A Good Camera Phone

Build of the phone

Large screen might not be always better. The New Sony Xperia XZ comes with 5.2 Inch display with Full HD resolutions. Personally, I like the screen size. It is large enough for mobile entertainment and small enough to be held with one hand.

Another feature that surprised me is the fingerprint sensor; which is located on the power button. That makes a lot of sense since users are so used to wake up the phone by pressing the power button. As of now, I am rather neutral to the location and accuracy of the fingerprint sensor. Nonetheless, it is generally fine provided you don’t press and release your finger too quickly.

Stunning camera performance
There are several attributes of the camera that excites me. First, the 23MP of the rear camera which produce sharp and clear images. Second, its proprietary RGBC-IR sensor which Sony claimed it is capable to produce rich and vibrant colour. Ok, I am sold by the camera.

Well, pictures speak a thousand words. I have uploaded some of my photos below:

Don’t believe in the photo I’ve uploaded? Check out #shotbyxperia, #shotbyxperiaxz & #sonymobilesg for more photos

The camera also starts fast and responses quickly when u press the shutter. In my opinion, *it is so much better than the older Xperia phones.

*I didn’t own the older Xperia precisely because their camera are quite laggy. But, the new Xperia XZ has changed my perception).

Front facing camera is packed with 13MP sensor which produces nice selfie photo. To a certain extent, I feel its front facing camera could perform as well as rear camera of mid-range phones currently in the market. **The handshutter feature could accurately detect your palm. Since you do not need to touch the shutter on the camera, it greatly reduces the chance of getting blur selfie photo.

Trying

Another feature by Sony Xperia XZ that most phones or even some DSLRs in the market could not offer – 4K video recording. I shot a night scene of Singapore in 4K and I was impressed by the amount of details even under a low light condition. Take a look of the sample video below.

Sample Video of Singapore River (Night)

**I understand that I have mentioned on my Facebook before that the phone camera seems to be a bit laggy after playing with it for a while during its Singapore launch. I would like to take back what I’ve said. The fact is I have brought this device to Japan and Taiwan for a long holiday. The phone performs well under different environments be it up on the high mountain to wet conditions. I suspect an update was done to fix the issue.

Battery and Heat Management.

Battery capacity is only 2900 mAh which is comparatively lower than what most of the smartphones in the market offer. Well, I think it is unfair to judge the battery performance by just looking at its capacity.  Nonetheless, it will be still one of the key factors that determines the time of usage.

During my visit to Taiwan and Japan, I took hundreds of photos and videos. Battery life becomes exceptionally challenging. With lots of video and photo-taking, the phone could not last more than 10 hours.

Heat management has improved compared to the previous Xperia XZ. I have run tonnes of apps on the phone and I don’t remember experiencing any crashes or any heat issues.

The only time that I experienced heat issues is when I was doing a video recording with the device. The device gets hot and there was once, some camera functions were disabled (in-build safety feature to manage the heat and to protect the phone as well as the user)

Price

Price wise is competitive if you compare to other high-end smartphones in the market and it is certainly one of the models that you should be put in your radar. Recommended retail price – SGD 998/-

Likes And Dislikes

Likes: Camera and price (if you compare to other high-end devices in the smartphone market)

Dislikes: Heat issue

Who should buy?

If you are looking for a productive phone, the Sony Xperia XZ is certainly not designed for your liking. However, it is a good travel phone for people who love taking photos but do not wish to carry lots of camera equipment. The battery life issue could be solved with power bank (anybody don’t pack a power bank when out for tour? Don’t think so…)

The dual SIM cards slot also makes Xperia XZ travel-friendly. (The best part you do not need to use a pin to open the SIM card slot)

OnePlus 3 is Hitting Singapore This July

SINGAPORE, 15 Jun 2016OnePlus is releasing its long-awaited flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 3 in Singapore from Q3 (July) onwards at traditional retail stores. Available in Graphite and Soft Gold.

OnePlus 3 will be available in Graphite and Soft Gold

The OnePlus 3 features Dash Charge fast charging technology, which adds a day of power in only half an hour. It comes completely unlocked – no carrier contracts necessary, and an unlocked bootloader . It is also the first OnePlus smartphone to be available for purchase at launch without an invite on OnePlus’ e-commerce site.

“We know that the best smartphone is the one that works exactly how you want it to,” said OnePlus Founder and CEO Pete Lau. “The OnePlus 3 delivers that experience. It combines what our customers already love about our products with what they want and expect next. For example, Dash Charge sets a new standard for fast charging technology. It’s a flagship smartphone inspired by – and made for – our fans.”

Dash Charge – A Day’s Power in Half an Hour

The OnePlus 3 utilizes Dash Charge technology, a faster, cooler and safer way to charge a smartphone. Unlike other quick charging technologies, Dash Charge replenishes more than 60% of the 3,000 mAh battery in 30 minutes and continues fast charging even when streaming video or playing energy-intensive games. This is made possible by leveraging a large electric current for stable, consistent charging speeds. In addition, Dash Charge carries more current than other charging solutions, and at lower temperatures, by shifting the power management process from the phone itself to the Dash Charge adapter, so a vast majority of the heat generated while charging never reaches the device. Along with five custom safety measures in place to safeguard the adaptor, cable and phone itself, users can charge their OnePlus 3 as fast as possible without worry.

Smart Capture – High-quality Photos and Easy Selfies

The 16 MP rear camera on the OnePlus 3 provides better imaging with incredible detail and clarity. OnePlus’ proprietary Smart Capture, allows users to capture the ideal shot in any environment. Smart Capture functionalities include HD Mode, Auto HDR and Dynamic De-noise, which compares several frames of the same photo and blends them together in post-processing to reduce noise. The OnePlus 3 also includes a new Smile Capture feature, allowing user to take selfie photo using the front-facing 8 MP camera simply by smiling.

Dual-stabilization technologies – Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) – help reduce blur, ensuring photos come out as planned.

Premium Design – Elegantly Curved Aluminum Unibody

The design of the OnePlus 3 takes aesthetics, quality and usability to a new level. The all-metal unibody, carved from a single slab of space-grade aluminum alloy, makes for a seamless, resilient build, while the balance of soft curves against sharp lines creates a striking impression and comfortable grip. At 7.3 mm, the OnePlus 3 is one of the thinnest flagships ever. The 5.5-inch 1080p Optic AMOLED display produces colors that are more vivid and true-to-life than ever before – even in bright sunlight.

Fast, Powerful, Customizable

The OnePlus 3 was designed to deliver maximum performance. Packing the new quad-core Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 820 processor (up to 2.2 GHz), the OnePlus 3 performs tasks 35% faster than the OnePlus 2 and features a 40% boost in graphical power – all at a fraction of the power consumption.

The device also sets a new standard in smartphone memory. The OnePlus 3 boasts 6 GB of LPDDR4 RAM, allowing for next-level multitasking without delay or lag and ensuring it can handle the most demanding apps. The OnePlus 3 also features an improved, more durable ceramic fingerprint sensor that improves accuracy with increased use. Offering the ability to unlock the device in under 0.3 seconds, even from a sleeping screen, users can access their phone faster and more accurately.

Their custom operating system, OxygenOS, offers a fast, clean, customizable and bloat-free operating system based on Android Marshmallow. With off-screen gestures and customizable capacitive hardware and software buttons built in, the OnePlus 3 allows customers to personalize their smartphone experience.

The unlocked OnePlus 3 never ties you down to a carrier. Customers can have more control over connectivity with the ability to choose from a wide band of support for service providers across the globe. Additionally, with dual Nano SIM card support, the OnePlus 3 can connect to two networks with ease.

Availability

Fans in Singapore can expect to lay their hands on the OnePlus 3 at traditional retail stores from the start of Q3 (July), with pricing to be confirmed. The OnePlus 3 will be available for online purchase, followed by traditional retail stores.

Event – Sony Showcases Hi-End Projector – VPL-VW5000ES

Announced at Sound Decisions, the Sony VPL-VW5000ES is the first projector designed specifically for home cinema use that features 4K resolution powered by a laser light engine that provides 5,000 lumens of brightness, is compatible with High Dynamic Range (HDR), emulates the new BT.2020 color gamut, and covers the full DCI colour space.

Source: Instagram user @weewu

Sony continues to be the only manufacturer designing projectors specifically for the home theatre market that provides full 4K resolution imagers. Sony’s advanced SXRD panels are designed to produce outstanding native device contrast and when coupled with the laser light engine, the VPL-VW5000ES provides an infinite dynamic contrast ratio and 5,000 lumens of color light output.

The VPL-VW5000ES covers the full DCI-P3 color gamut. By taking advantage of its professional calibration tools the VPL-VW5000ES allows the user to choose to emulate the BT.2020 color space, as well. This ensures compatibility with upcoming home video formats. And by bringing together high brightness, infinite dynamic contrast and the latest signal processing technology, the VPL-VW5000ES provides compatibility with High Dynamic Range (HDR), enabling the viewer to see wider ranges of contrast and colors than ever before.

Sony’s Advanced Motionflow feature reduces blur and maintains brightness and VPL-VW5000ES’ extremely fast imagers allow viewing of fast action content – especially sporting events – with great smoothness, even with 4K signals. Along with HDR and BT.2020 capabilities, the VPL-VW5000ES also includes an HDMI input that is HDCP 2.2 compatible. That same input has enough bandwidth to accept 4K 60p signals up to YCbCr 4:4:4 8bit or YCbCr 4:2:2 12bit, thus helping to ensure that the VPL-VW5000ES is prepared to handle all types of video content now and in the future.

The VPL-VW5000ES can be tilted as much as 30 degrees, allowing for flexible installations that take advantage of mirrors to place larger screens in smaller spaces, such as rear projection. Thanks to a newly developed liquid cooling system with low noise operation, the projector can also be located near viewers without impacting the enjoyment of a program’s audio. The unit ships with a standard powered lens with a zoom ratio from 1.27 to 2.73:1 and lens shift capability of +/- 80% vertical and +/- 31% horizontal.

Benefits of the VPL-VW5000ES’ laser light engine include fast on/off times with no waiting for the projector to cool down – which means you can immediately turn it back on to resume binge-watching your favorite show. The light engine delivers a long operational life with a linear decrease in brightness, so the color shifts seen with traditional lamp wear are not expected. But if the color settings do shift over time the VPL-VW5000ES includes a built-in re-calibration function that can be used to test how much the projector has drifted from its original factory calibration and reset it.

The VPL-VW5000ES is available for pre-order now at a recommended retail price of $84,000. For more information, visit http://pro.sony-asia.com/projector.

Press Release – Sony’s New Cyber-shot RX10 III Camera Brings Extended Zoom Capability to Acclaimed RX Line

  • Featuring newly developed ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* 24-600mm
    F2.4-4 large-aperture high-magnification zoom lens
  • High-fidelity capture of image detail and fast readout with 20.1MP 1.0-type stacked CMOS sensor with DRAM chip and BIONZ X processor
  • 4K recording with full pixel readout and no pixel binning and extensive video functions including S-Gamut/S-Log2 for compatibility with professional movie editing workflow
  • Ultra-telephoto super slow motion recording at up to 1000fps
  • Fast Intelligent AF achieves 0.09-second fast autofocus to capture decisive moments

(SINGAPORE, 4 April 2016) – Sony today introduced the latest addition to the award winning line of RX Cyber-shot cameras, the new RX10 III (DSC-RX10M3). Featuring a newly-developed extended 25x super-telephoto zoom lens with an incredible focal range of 24-600mm and silent shutter capability, it is designed for demanding photographers and videographers who want to shoot fast moving, far away subjects such as sports events, concerts or wild animals. It is able to reproduce high-quality content at a variety of focal lengths and camera settings that would require more than three, large lenses for an interchangeable-lens camera user.

The combination of the 20.1MP 1.0-type stacked sensor, bright zoom lens and BIONZ X processor ensures the highest image quality throughout the whole focal range, whether shooting stills or video at up to 4K quality. Furthermore, by pairing the convenience of an ultra-telephoto lens with an innovative stacked CMOS image sensor, the RX10 III delivers new imaging experiences such as super slow motion video capture at up to 1000 fps all the way up close at ultra-telephoto range. It benefits from an extremely accurate AF that focuses in just 0.09 seconds and all of this is packaged in a premium body that combines practicality and rugged good looks.

Lens advantages

The jewel in the crown of the RX10 III is the newly developed ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* lens. Covering a huge 24-600mm (25x Optical magnification) focal range, the RX10 III is ideal in a range of different shooting conditions, from wide angle scenery shots to ultra-telephoto images of sports events or wild birds, all in one compact package. The large-aperture lens (F2.4-4.0) maximises the ability of the 1.0-type large sensor to achieve high image quality and beautiful bokeh, even in the ultra-telephoto region.

Newly designed optics include eight ED glass elements including one super ED glass element, and two ED aspherical lenses. All of these elements work together to compensate for chromatic aberration that often afflicts telephoto lenses and results in high-contrast and ultra-sharp image quality from corner to corner across the entire zoom range. The newly developed optical design contains the sophisticated advanced aspherical (AA) lens and delivers excellent imaging performance while keeping the lens unit itself small. Additionally, with a minimum focusing distance of 72cm at a fully extended 600mm (0.49x maximum magnification), the new lens is capable of producing amazingly detailed tele-macro images. The ZEISS® T* Coating minimises flare and ghosting that often affects image quality in adverse lighting conditions and delivers faithful colour reproduction and clear image expression.

The aperture unit has nine blades that are designed to create a near-perfect circle in the F2.4 to F11 aperture range which enables soft, beautiful bokeh expression. The Optical SteadyShotTM algorithm has been optimised for the lens design of the RX10 III and delivers up to 4.5 stops image stabilisation for outstanding protection against camera shake, even when shooting from the hand in ultra-telephoto or low-light conditions.

Premium Speed and Response Times

The RX10 III features a 1.0-type stacked CMOS sensor with DRAM chip which is back-illuminated to allow it to collect light more efficiently. Combined with the BIONZ X image processing engine, the RX10 III achieves a wide sensitivity range of ISO 64 – ISO 12800, with low noise, even at high sensitivity settings. It employs a stacked structure that places the high-speed signal processing circuit on a different layer from the pixel area, significantly expanding the signal processing circuit and achieving astonishing high-speed processing. The DRAM chip at the rear of the sensor temporarily stores and allows readout of large volumes of signal data which can be processed without delay, enabling super slow motion recording at up to 1000fps. This is especially beneficial when capturing dynamic footage from a long distance, such as stadium based sports events where close access to the subjects is impossible but impactful, high quality footage is required. The accelerated readout of data from the image sensor also delivers a major reduction in image distortion of fast-moving subjects such as tennis players or animals on the move.

With shutter speeds as fast as 1/32000 second, the electronic shutter performs comparably to mechanical shutters that don’t distort images. Moreover, the electronic shutter can operate silently, so you can shoot recitals, wildlife and other sensitive subjects without disrupting the scene. Continuous shooting is possible at up to 14fps which enables the photographer to capture moments of fleeting beauty or facial expressions. In addition, the RX10 III offers accurate tracking during continuous shooting with AF at up to 5fps.

The combination of the premium performance characteristics of the RX10 III and its extended zoom capabilities open up a whole new world of imaging experiences.

High Quality 4K Movie Recording

The RX10 III records video in 4K quality at a high bit rate in the highly efficient XAVC S format with full pixel readout and no pixel binning. This means that it captures approximately 1.7x more information than is required for 4K movie output and this oversampling effect enhances image detail as it minimises moiré and jaggies. The newly developed lens means that the camera can shoot high-quality 4K movies between 24-600mm, enabling huge flexibility in the types of shooting situations that can be captured. Furthermore, the inclusion of a high-speed front-end LSI assists the BIONZ X high-speed image processing engine in significantly reducing the rolling shutter phenomenon that can often distort how fast-moving subjects appear in 4K movies.

To enable compatibility with a professional video workflow, the RX10 III supports a variety of movie functions that are typically found on professional video cameras. The functions include Picture Profile, S-Gamut/S-Log2, Gamma Display Assist, enhanced Zebra function, clean HDMI output, TC/UB, REC Control, Dual REC, and Marker function.

High speed autofocus

The RX10 III features the Fast Intelligent AF system that has attracted praise amongst RX10 II and RX100 IV users, with the spatial object detection algorithm fully optimised for the RX10 III. This allows the camera to predict the point of focus by detecting the subject even before the shutter button is pressed halfway. Once the shutter button is pressed halfway down, the camera focuses on the subject without delay, delivering a very smooth AF performance in just 0.09 seconds.4

New innovations

The RX10 III features a number of other upgrades compared to the current RX10 models. These include triple lens rings for focus, zoom and aperture, each operable on the side of the lens for smooth operation. The handgrip shape has been optimised for the new high-magnification large-aperture lens, particularly to enhance grip security when holding the camera at eye level. A new Focus Hold button on the lens barrel allows the focus distance to be locked when it pressed and can also be assigned as a custom function button. A new soft carrying case, LCJ-RXJ, will also be available for the new camera.

The new Sony Cyber-shot™ RX10 III camera will be available at all Sony Stores, Sony Centres and selected Sony authorised dealers from May 2016.

A variety of exclusive stories and exciting new content shot with the new RX10 III will be posted directly at the global Sony Photo Gallery and the Sony Camera Channel on YouTube.
