Press Release – OPPO Unveils Super-Fast 15-Minute Flash Charge and World’s First SmartSensor Image Stabilization Tech at MWC

Singapore, 24 February, 2016  The evolving smartphone brand OPPO, fresh off of 50 million smartphone sales in 2015, presented another exciting advance in smartphone user experience when it unveiled a breakthrough SmartSensor image stabilization and Super VOOC Flash Charge technologies at Mobile World Congress 2016.

“With our commitment to equipping consumers with the best technology, OPPO invests great efforts in technological innovation,” said Mr. Sky Li, Vice President of OPPO and Managing Director of International Mobile Business. “We are excited to share these breakthrough technologies with the world at MWC 2016 they’re the result of our commitment to listening to consumers and valuing their feedback to create more delightful user experiences for them in the future.”

Super VOOC Flash Charge: Giving a full charge in 15 minutes

Slow charging times and underwhelming battery life is a consistent problem for smartphone users. To address this problem, OPPO is proud to present Super VOOC Flash Charge technology.

Super VOOC Flash Charge improves on the original VOOC Flash Charge introduced by OPPO in 2014 and now used by 18 million consumers worldwide. Original VOOC Flash Charge revolutionized charging by giving users 2 hours of talk after just 5 minutes of charging. Super VOOC takes it to the next level, offering a full 10 hours of talk time with only five minutes of charging, and filling a 2500mAh battery in only 15 minutes, a never-before-seen speed.

Super VOOC Flash Charge uses a 5V low-voltage pulse-charge algorithm, ensuring a low temperature charge thats safe for the battery and dynamically regulating the current to charge the phone in the shortest time possible. The allnew algorithm pairs with a customized super battery, as well as a new adapter, cable and connector made using premium, military-grade materials. Super VOOC Flash Charge supports Micro USB or typeC interfaces, in line with the global standard.

Super VOOC Flash Charge’s safe, low-temperature charging algorithm makes it perfect for using the phone while its charging, such as watching an HD video, or playing a game, a functionality which other quick charge technologies dont support.

SmartSensor Image Stabilization: The first ever sensor-based, pixel-level optical image stabilizer

Smartphones are taking over as personal cameras, making mobile photography performance a critical factor for smartphone buyers. Continuing its commitment to breakthroughs in the smartphone camera revolution and to give users the ability to take great photos anytime and anywhere”, OPPO decided several years ago to tackle the universally recognized issue of image stabilization.

Optical image stabilization technologies come in two types, lens-based and sensor-based, but due to the size limitations of smartphones, all previous solutions across the industry were lensbased. Relying on a groundbreaking MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system), OPPOs SmartSensor is the first-ever sensor-based solution for smartphones, as well as the smallest optical image stabilizer of any kind in the world!

Moreover, SmartSensor improves on other solutions with a key advantage. Existing lens-based stabilizers can only correct for vibrations on two axes of motions, the pitch axis and yaw axis, even though the most common type of unwanted shaking during photography actually takes place on the roll axis. SmartSensor solves this problem, allowing for image stabilization on three axes, pitch, yaw and the all-important roll. Making split-second adjustments with its comb-shaped monocrystalline silicon MEMS, SmartSensor achieves full three-axis image stabilization in a mere 15 milliseconds.

At the same time, SmartSensor uses a voltagedriven sensor, reducing power consumption to as low as 10 milliwatts, 50 times less than the power consumption of lensbased solutions.

Lens-based systems, with their increased power consumption, can quickly heat up the module, affecting image quality, especially during extended photo shoots. But the low power consumption of the fine-tuned MEMS keeps temperatures low and preserves image quality even in long shooting sessions.

Meanwhile, whereas lens-based image stabilizers generally have a precision of between 3 and 5µm, SmartSensor remains precise to a vibration of just 0.3µm. The size of a pixel is usually larger than 1µm, meaning that SmartSensor is the world’s first pixellevel image stabilize.

With SmartSensor, OPPO smartphones become like pocketsized SLR cameras, able to capture lifes beautiful moments in breathtaking detail. Even when lighting conditions aren’t ideal, such as at a party or concert, SmartSensor ensures clear and bright images by allowing a longer exposure time.

At MWC, OPPO also announced a growing emphasis on its “Camera Phone” strategy. Under the new strategy, OPPO plans to strengthen a welldeserved association between OPPO and great photography. Through continued refinement of its photography platform as well as new innovations like SmartSensor, OPPO aims to bring users technology that will allow them to better record their lives and share their experiences, so they can capture every moment as it really is: sharp, vivid and bright.

Jonathan Tan ‘Your House Downstairs’ Professional Architecture category

Tan is a Senior Account Executive for the award-winning marketing agency DDB Group Singapore, and a photography enthusiast with a particular interest in street photography.

His shortlisted series ‘Your House Downstairs’ was shot entirely on a smartphone – Tan believes that photography isn’t about the equipment, but about observing and capturing the fleeting sights around us.

In this series, Tan captured the architectural wall features of the void decks of Housing Development Board flats – the homes of more than 80% of Singaporeans. This ‘hole-in-the-wall’ feature comes in various shapes and bright pops of colours which jazzes up the void decks, which are also common spaces for Singaporeans to gather. While they are more commonly found in older flats, these ‘holes’ are recognisable by Singaporeans as part of Singapore’s landscape and heritage. This series aims to compile these holes that are found in what Singaporeans would colloquially describe as, ‘your house downstairs’.

Talking about being shortlisted, Tan commented: “As a casual photography hobbyist, I am truly honoured to be shortlisted for such a prestigious competition. I am glad that my photos depicting a part of Singapore’s architectural heritage are showcased on an international platform.”

*Based on prescribed methods for determining effective pixels for image sensors

The IMX318 boasts a stacked structure and the industry’s smallest unit pixels, which measure 1.0μm (micrometers) in size. With this, the image sensor achieves a compact, type 1/2.6 size suitable for inclusion into smartphones, while still realizing a high resolution of 22.5 effective megapixels, among the top in the industry. This new image sensor not only boasts enhanced resolution, but it also matches its predecessor in image quality despite the IMX318’s smaller size and unit pixels (IMX230 predecessor model: type 1/2.4 sensor with 1.12μm unit pixel size). Additionally, Sony has succeeded in equipping the IMX318 with cutting-edge digital imaging features, namely high speed built-in hybrid AF and 3-axis electronic image stabilization for video, a first*1 for the industry. With this image sensor, the user can capture image stills of those decisive moments reliably in high quality, as well as high resolution video without fear of blur.

●Main Features

1. The industry’s smallest unit pixel size at 1.0μm, achieving compact size (type 1/2.6) while realizing 22.5 effective megapixels high resolution

As smartphones grow ever thinner, so too are image sensors growing increasingly more compact. In line with this trend, Sony has developed a miniscule 1.0μm pixel sensor that, despite its small size, realizes high image quality. To accomplish this, Sony employed manufacturing technology that improves light utilization efficiency, as well as circuit design technology that eliminates noise, a root cause of deterioration in image quality. With this innovation, Sony has realized an image sensor that delivers high quality images, while also boasting small optical size and a high resolution of 22.5 megapixels. Night shots have long been a weak point for the compact cameras used in smartphones, with the lack of light translating into excessive visual noise. The IMX318 addresses this weakness and realizes beautiful photography in nighttime conditions.

No drop in image quality from the 1.0μIMX230 predecessorm unit pixel size), despite the model (Left: latter1.12’s smallerμm unit sizepixel size)      to the IMX318 (Right:

. The industry’s first*1 image sensor with built-in hybrid AF, as fast as 0.03 seconds
*2, and 3-axis electronic image stabilization

Hybrid AF

Hybrid AF, which merges image plane phase detection AF with contrast detection AF, has previously been realized through the combination of an image sensor and an application processor. But with the IMX318, Sony has created the industry’s first*1 stacked CMOS image sensor with hybrid AF built into the sensor’s internal signal processor. The IMX318 leverages Sony’s high-speed AF technology that has been honed over many years, boasting an AF as fast as 0.03 seconds*2 (and as fast as 0.017 seconds when shooting video at 60fps). With this power in hand, the user can capture those decisive moments reliably in focus, whether shooting stills or video.

When shooting with hybrid AF: 0.03 seconds(Time required for focusing)

Image plane phase detection AF: Utilizes dedicated image plane phase detection AF pixels embedded throughout the image sensor pixel array.

Contrast AF: Works off the contrast of the subject.

3-axis electronic image stabilization for video

With the IMX318, Sony has also created the industry’s first*1 stacked CMOS image sensor with image stabilization functionality built into its internal signal processor. This sensor leverages the image stabilization technology that Sony has cultivated over its years developing cameras, realizing smooth 4K*3 videos with little camera shake by making effectively use of the signal output obtained from the external 3-axis (pitch, yaw, and roll) gyro sensor*4. Sony’s unique image stabilization technology incorporated into the IMX318 corrects not only camera shake, but also lens distortion, making for more beautiful videos. Furthermore, because image stabilization is achieved by processing within the hardware of the image sensor, less power is used than when it is accomplished by software processing in the external application processor. Since it enables smooth video shooting, this image sensor is suited for incorporation into not only smartphones, but also a variety of other products that tend to generate substantial camera shake, such as aerial drones used for image capture.

34K and high frame rate video recording, through high-speed communications leveraging the latest MIPI specifications

Sony elected to adopt the MIPI (Mobile Industry Processor Interface) Alliance’s latest C-PHY 1.0/D-PHY 1.2 specifications for this image sensor’s interface. With this interface, the IMX318 is able to achieve more power efficient and faster data transmission from the image sensor to the application processor. As a result, even at the high resolution of 22.5 megapixels, transmission is realized for all pixels at 30fps. This enables seamless switching between high resolution video and still image photography, realizing the best of both worlds. Since the image sensor can transmit greater-than-4K resolution images for all pixels to the application processor, the user can capture 22.5 megapixel still images even while in the middle of recording video in 4K*3 at 30fps.
