MILAN, Italy and HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation (stock quote: MZDAF) has taken the wraps off Mazda-designed artworks, including “Bike by KODO concept” and “Sofa by KODO concept” on the eve of opening the event “Mazda Design: The Car as Art,” in the Italian city of Milan from April 14, 2015.
With “Mazda Design: The Car as Art,” Mazda is aiming to further the evolution of the expression of motion by attempting the expression of two key sensibilities rooted in Japanese aesthetics; RIN, a sense of self-restrained dignity, and EN, an alluring sensuality that speaks directly to the senses.
“Bike by KODO concept” is a track racer that seeks to express the innate beauty of the bicycle. Its minimalist structure is composed of the least possible number of parts. The frame was painstakingly formed by hammering a single sheet of steel and the black leather saddle is hand-stitched, featuring the same red thread and stitch design as the all-new Mazda MX-5. The bicycle’s mixture of dynamism and allure is evocative of the Mazda MX-5’s styling.
“Sofa by KODO concept,” a collaborative effort between Mazda’s designers and Italian furniture makers, exhibits an exquisite blend of Mazda Design’s refined sensibilities and fine Italian craftsmanship backed by a long tradition of furniture-making. The form of the sofa is as honed as that of the all-new Mazda CX-3 and evokes the strong stance common to all Mazda’s new-generation vehicles.
Also on display at the event are a number of works by traditional Japanese craftsmen inspired by Mazda’s KODO—Soul of Motion design philosophy. KODOKI is a tsuiki copperware wine cooler hammered from a single sheet of copper in Japan’s famous Gyokusendo metal-working studio. SHIRAITO is a traditional lacquered box created by Kinjo-Ikkokusai which expresses the richness of natural phenomena using multiple layers of lacquer and finely-broken eggshell.
“Over the past few years, design has become an essential part of who we are, adding an artistic value to the entire Mazda brand experience,” said Masahiro Moro, Mazda’s Managing Executive Officer, in charge of Global Marketing, Customer Service and Sales Innovation. “As such, it only makes sense that we introduce our design messages here in Milan, a city of the apex of the design world, in order to elevate our brand image.”
I am sure those who are in the 30s remember those days when we could be spending hours in the living room flipping around with the wires connecting between the bulky, enormous size amplifier and the tall, classy floor-standing speakers (back in those days, having a giant sound system is a pretty big deal!)
In the 90s, computer speakers, MP3 and MPEG were deemed to be bad quality(if you think it is getting better nowadays, go dig out your old CD and listen to yourself!) and consumers will spend over 100 bucks to buy CD and LD (DVD comes slightly later) so that they could enjoy a theatre-like experience at home. (“Home Theatre System” and “Hi-Fi” if those terms have rung the bell!)
Speaking about Laser Disc (LD) or Home Theatre System ( I am pretty sure people who are born in the early 2000s have not seen this Alien device before!), people who underwent that era will know a very Japanese brand ” Pioneer”.

Back in those days, Pioneer sold millions of sound systems to all around the world. Capitalised on their expertise in sound system, they launched satellite TV channel offering karaoke music videos in Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan.
Stock (quote 6773.JP) was trading at high 4600 yen.
Time changes. Consumer nowadays are looking for convenience than quality. More compact sound systems that are cheaper and easy to set up has gained popularity among the consumers. If you visit your friends’ house, you seldom see a big sound system in their living room. Likely, you will see a soundbar and TV.
Unsold inventories start to build up in Pioneer’s warehouse due to slow response to market changes incurring tremendous loss for the past few years. Gone with the good old days, stock tumbles to only a few hundred yen.
However, situation starts to get better for Pioneer as the company repositions itself in the electronics sectors. Now, they are focusing on car navigating and sound system OEM services. The strategy has proven to be a good move. Sales is growing steadily for the past few years.

Will Pioneer make a comeback? Although the company is able to bring down the loss, it is still pretty uncertain for the company given the fact of intense competition in the car system market. Nonetheless, the industry outlook is pretty promising. Google has spearheaded the commercialisation of the smart car system. With their expertise in the hardware, there could be a chance for Pioneer to make a comeback.
Pioneer Electronics launches AppRadioLIVE, their proprietary new app that enhances the driving experience for users through a single touch interface that offers seamless aggregated content most popular among existing customers.
AppRadioLIVE’s dynamic home screen feature contents and services from Pioneer’s partners such as Feedly, Stitcher, and Eventseeker, which are classified into four quadrants – mapping, music, news information and calendar events. With these contents placed side-by-side on AppRadioLIVE, AppRadio Mode users can now easily switch between apps, making their drive more fun and safer.
If you are an entrepreneur or business developer, you are constantly fighting for sales otherwise you will lose out in this highly-competitive market. Time is everything! As a sales person or entrepreneur (especially those at the early stage of startup), you need to be highly efficient even on the move!
Meeting your clients is like engaging a fire fight. You need weapons and transportation for wars. Your products are your bullets and your car should be like your armor vehicle. Besides transportation capabilities, armor-vehicles have fighting and communication capabilities. Question here, “besides transportation, what else can our car do?”
I am sure all of us agree that car is a liability. Why? Simply because we do not see much of owning a car except for the ERP (for those who don’t understand, it is the acronym of Electronic Road Pricing), car loans, petrol charges and road taxes. We need to look at uses or applications of car beyond transportation.
I come across the term “Mobile Office”. One of the examples is to convert your vehicle into a mobile place. I believe this is the area that can be further explored. In fact Volkswagen (Stock Quotes: VOW.DE) has the concept of such car. Below are some of the photos of Volkswagen T6.
I am using this example only to prove my point that we need more applications on wheels. In fact, I believe that the design of the concept car can be further developed to suit the needs of the mass (especially entrepreneurs who might not have an office to work since office rental can be quite expensive).Sounds hard? But it is not very hard for the technicians to change or modify your car parts. If you watch MTV channel, there is a TV program called “Pimp My Ride” that actually helps to “renovate” your car.
Enough of Wonderland! Let’s get back to reality. In Singapore, we have seen car loves spend ten thousands of dollars just on installing lighting and car audio system. I am sure there is a demand of office usages on cars. But, Can we have such car modification in Singapore? Bear in mind, you might be installing additional battery (approval from LTA – Land Transport Authority ) to power up your equipments such as communication devices which might transmit wireless signal (approval from IDA – Infocomm Development Authority).Things are not going to be that simple. I believe there are more factors to consider.
I am very willing to hear more. Please drop your comments.
Guys, I walked past Raffles City this morning and got to see a display of F1 car. I believe it is a campaign held by several companies. BMW, Credit Suisse, Intel and Dell are one of the companies participating in this campaign.
I am not sure about this but I overheard some onlookers that there is a free photo taking with the F1 model on 22 Aug from 8pm to 10pm at Raffles City.
